South Carolina
From Charles Town to Charleston
Indian Slaves
What was a bigger commodity than fur? Indian slaves. This was the largest commodity by the Carolina colony, even bigger than deer skin. Carolina Indian traders were able to push the Spanish, French, and even Virginians to take the market of Indians in the southeast.
Aristocracy?
The Carolina colony was a bit different from the others. Anthony Ashley Cooper, the Earl of Shaftesbury, and his secretary John Locke were the ones to draft a Fundamental Constitution for this new colony. In this, they represented slavery but trying to establish a nobility structure similar to the Britain failed. The only sort of aristocracy that the Carolina colony developed was wealth that was driven by slave labor.
