MMHS Counseling Newsletter
A Message From Your Counselors. December 2020.
Happy Holidays Matadors!
I hope that your Thanksgiving Break was restful and full of joy spending time with loved ones. As you know official grades will be available around mid December and we would encourage parents and students to take some time to speak to your teachers about any possible improvements that can be made to your grades. Students who are working on Acellus classes via Grade Repair or learning center classes please get those completed ASAP! Let's finish off this quarter STRONG Matadors! As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your student's counselor or teachers for assistance.
We are also in the midst of college application season! We are offering College Bound every Monday and Wednesday, from 1:45pm-3:45pm via zoom. Students can get help with college applications, FAFSA, CA Dream Act applications, scholarships, resumes, and more! Ms. Medina and Ms. Garcia would love to help, so please pop in.
JUST IN: Both the UC's and CSU's have extended their application DEADLINES!
The UC's have extended their application deadline to December 4th, 2020 and the CSU's have extended their application deadline to December 15th, 2020. Don't delay! Get your applications in today!
COVID-19: Resources for Parents and Students
We know that our Matador students and families are anxious about the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, especially given the media attention to this issue. During this time, it is important for us to get information from reliable resources.
Below you can find the most up-to-date information on the Coronavirus and what steps you can take to prevent the spread and protect ourselves.
SAHM recommends that teens and their families review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) websites for the most up to date information about COVID-19.
The CDC’s COVID-19 website provides detailed information about how to protect yourself and others, what to do if you think you are sick, and more.
The WHO’s COVID-19 website provides information about protecting yourself and others from getting sick, protection measures for those who have visited areas where COVID-19 is spreading, coping with stress, and more.
We also recommend the American Academy of Pediatrics’ healthychildren.org website for information about COVID-19.

CAL GRANT Programs
A Cal Grant is money for college you don’t have to pay back!!!
To qualify, you must apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) by the deadline and meet the eligibility and financial requirements as well as any minimum GPA requirements. Cal Grants can be used at any University of California, California State University or California Community College, as well as qualifying independent and career colleges or technical schools in California.
There are three kinds of Cal Grants — A, B and C — but you don’t have to figure out which one to apply for. Your eligibility will be based on your FAFSA or CADAA responses, your verified Cal Grant GPA, the type of California colleges you list on your FAFSA and whether you’re a recent high school graduate.
