Caitlin's Corner
Students in Mrs. Holmquist and Mrs. Anderson's classes learned how to make compost this week! We gathered our deceased plants and surrounding leaves and straw to make mini-compost piles.
Earlier this month we had a school-wide taste test of Kale chips!
The link to the recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/176957/baked-kale-chips/
Overall 226 students tasted the kale. Students were asked to vote whether they tried it, liked it, or loved it using their taster cup. Our results were overall: 56 tried it, 21 liked it, and 126 loved it.
We use the term tried it because even if students didn't like it they still were courageous to try two bites. Did you know that it takes on average 10 tries of a new vegetable or fruit before students to commit to eat a serving of new food?
Student Pick Up & Drop Off Safety Plan
Due to the amount of students entering and exiting the building at the same time, it is safest if only students enter and exit the building during arrival and dismissal times.
If you need to bring your child into school or pick him/her up, please help us keep all of our students safe by entering through the front door to check-in the office to receive a pass.
Toys, Balls, Playing Cards, & Games
There has been an increase in the amount of toys, balls, and games coming to school each day. In order to keep these items safe and not a distraction during learning time, please have your child leave them at home unless explicit permission has been given to you by a teacher. The guidelines from our school district elementary handbook are as follows:
LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED PERSONAL PROPERTY - The District’s insurance policy does not provide coverage for lost, stolen or damaged personal property while on the school premises. Toys and valuables should remain at home.
LOST AND FOUND - Each school has a LOST AND FOUND. Have your child check this area regularly. All lost and found items must be claimed by the end of the school year. Please write your child’s name in their coat, jacket, sweatshirt, etc. to help identify lost items.
Personal Devices & Cell Phones
To maintain safety of all students, we do not allow personal devices at school (iPads, Tablets). Please be sure your child keeps his/her device at home, this includes a watch with a camera. If it is necessary for your child to have a cell phone at school for parent communication, the phone needs to stay with your child’s teacher or in the office during the school day. Click on link to our School Board Policy for acceptable use.
Acceptable Use of Electronic Networks
From the Elementary Student Handbook:
TELEPHONE AND CELL USE BY STUDENTS - Cell phones are not allowed to be visible or used on Kalispell Public Schools elementary campuses. The use of the telephone by students is discouraged as we have a minimum number of lines in the school and it must be maintained for business. Therefore, unless the call is an emergency, permission will not be granted. Any after school arrangements with your child, except an emergency, need to be made before your child comes to school.
