Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; about 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. For the month of September it is Humble ISD's goal to have a SEA of GOLD, not only at the Gold Fight Win Football game on September 13th, but around town all month long. At ESE this month, we will be talking about Childhood Cancer and ways that we can show support to those who are going through this dreadful disease. CLAW Student Council will be collecting new stuffed animals, we will have discussions in class and we will meet survivors.
Together we are stronger.
Mrs. Davis was 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Creekwood Middle School when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 T Cell Lymphoma. She had a mass in her neck and on her lungs. She was fully sedated, on a ventilator and dialysis in the ICU at Texas Children's Hospital for 2 weeks because the cancer had caused her lungs to collapse and her kidneys to fail. Chemotherapy was started immediately. She spent the first month of her diagnosis in the hospital.
T Cell Lymphoma is a very rapid growing and aggressive cancer but it is very treatable and has a high survival rate. The protocol for treatment was 1 year but due to low blood counts and illness from time to time, the treatment lasted two years. Mrs. Davis received chemo about every other week and spinal taps about once a month. She was placed on a clinical trial in the middle of the protocol for a shot that she got every week for 16 weeks. Every other month she had a 72 hour treatment that required a hospital stay. Needless to say...it was a LONG 2 years. Through it all she remained strong and kept smiling. Her Mom, Dad, and brother were pillars of support and their bond is stronger than ever. Sunshine Kids was also a huge support system not only for Mrs. Davis but for her entire family.
On December 16, 1993, Mrs. Davis completed her last chemo treatment. They didn't have a bell to ring, but her favorite nurse brought root-beer and ice cream, so they celebrated with root-beer floats! She still keeps in touch with that nurse and the doctor who diagnosed her.
26 years later...Mrs. Davis has been married to her husband Aaron for 17 years, they have 2 children, Rhian, 15 and Max, 14. They live in Eagle Springs and Mrs. Davis has been a teacher at ESE since it opened in 2006. Every year on December 16 Mrs. Davis still celebrates her last chemo with root-beer floats.
Gold Fight Win
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Because we believe that TOGETHER we can find a cure for this awful disease, three LOCAL non profit organizations, Addi's Faith Foundation, L3 and Mother's Against Cancer have joined forces with Humble ISD to Go Gold!
Join us on Friday, September 13th at 7pm for the Atascocita VS Kingwood football game at Turner Stadium. Wear your GOLD and help us light up the stadium in honor of those children battling cancer. We encourage all of our ESE students to wear gold to school on Friday September 13.
