Childhood

- Born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 24, 1973.

- Lost her hearing at 18 months.

- Learned about Helen Keller.

- Attended the Central Institute for the Deaf and Blind in St. Louis, Missouri

- Learned two grade levels per year

- Returned to Alabama to graduate from public high school.

- Attended School of Fine Arts for a year and graduated from Berry High School in 1991.

- Gained a passion for ballet.

Obstacles

- Losing her hearing.

Overcoming Obstacles

Learned sign language and to read lips.

Used a hearing aid.

- Won the Miss Jackosnville State University

-Miss America in 1995

- She wrote multiple books; most popular was Let God Surprise You: Trust God with Your Dreams

Became a board member for the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education, from 1995-2002
