Basics About Summer Gardening
Summer brings to mind sunny days and plenty of fragrant flowers. Bring a summertime feeling to your backyard with a beautiful garden. Consider a few basic tips to get you started on your way to making a summer garden.
Get the Soil Ready
First, prepare your soil. You can add compost, top soil, and peat moss into your garden bed. If you don't want to do that, you can dig straight into the dirt that you have. If you go this route, you should till the soil with a roto-tiller or by hand and then build it up. It may need some compost to increase the soil nutrients that it has and to make it more workable. Rich soil is the foundation of a successful garden. You want the best soil to encourage your plants to thrive and grow.
Plants Need Water
Second, make sure you water the garden just enough so that it will grow. Less is more because over watering can make the plants have immature roots that will not go down deep to find water on their own. You should water when you first plant the seeds, then once or twice a week. The plants should also be watered during hot and dry spells. If it looks like your plants are wilting because of the sun, give them a little extra water. Much like any other living thing, plants must have water to live but too much of a good thing can make them drown.
Choose the Right Spot for Your Garden
Third, make sure that you plant are garden in a spot that will have direct sunlight for 6 to 8 hours each day. Some plants though only need about 4 to 6 hours of sun. These are: kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, collards, Swiss chard, and root vegetables. Those that need more sun are: beans, broccoli, squash, cabbage, melons, corn, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. It is important to know how much sun and water your plants need. With proper care, your garden will look lush and lovely throughout the summer season.
Eliminate the Weeds
Fourth, you will need to weed your garden. If your garden has weeds growing in it, make sure you take the weeds out. One thing you can do to cut down on weeds is to add mulch. The weeds can be pulled out manually or a weed whacker can quickly get rid of them.
These simple suggestions can help you start a summer garden you feel proud of. A professional landscaper offers advice and assistance to ensure your summer garden is even more impressive than you dream of.
