Sophocles
Sophocles,what kind of name is Sophocles?,you may be asking yourself.Sophocles is the man who wrote the myth many people may or may not know as "Oedipus."
Thebes
Thebes is a city founded by Cadmus.
Cadmus
Cadmus slew a dragon and was told to sow the teeth of the dragon to form a city.Out sprang giants form the teeth and were fully armed and were filled with anger. These giants fought each other until there were only five of them left.The five giants that were left became the fathers of Thebes.
Laius
Laius is the great grandson of Cadmus.He recieved a prediction that his son will kill him.The prediction was predicted by the Oracle of Apollo.
Oracle of Apollo
The Oracle of Apollo is like the holy temple for the Greeks. They come here to get predictions.
Jocasta
Jocasta you would call a mean mother.She and Laius put their infant son on a mountain side and pinned his feet down so he won't roll off.They told a servant to go kill this infant,but the servant couldn't, so he gave the infant baby to a childless king and queen.
Corinth
This is where King Polybus and Queen Merope were king and queen of and where the servant took the infant.
King Polybus
King Polybus was the adoptive infant known as Oedipus.He now became the adopted father of Oedipus.
Queen Merope
Queen Merope was now known as Oedipus's mother.
Oedipus
Oedipus was the baby infant on the mountain side,but because he was pinned down by his feet so he doesn't roll off the mountain side his feet got really messed up. They named him Oedipus because the way his foot looked.Oedipus meant "twisted foot."
Sphinx
A Sphinx is a winged monster with the head of a woman and the body of a lion. It kills everyone who fails at getting its riddle right. The only person who got it right was Oedipus
Antigone & Ismene,
Are the daughters of Oedipus and his biological mother Jocasta.
Eteocles and Polynices
Are the sons of Oedipus and his biological mother Jocasta.
Creon
Is the brother-in-law of Oedipus. Oedipus sent Creon to the Oracle of Apollo to ask how he can lift this blight. The answer to that was,"find Laius and murder him."Oedipus killed an old man at a cross road and that was King Laius.
