1A Classroom Update 13
May 20, 2016
April Showers Bring May Flowers
As the days get closer, we keep noticing how our 1A friends keep growing physically and through their academics! We are very excited to show you our most recent updates as to what we have been up to these past couple of weeks. We hope you enjoy this upcoming classroom update!
Writing
Our opinion writers have been hard at work expressing their point of views with topics they feel very strongly about. These past couple of weeks they have learned how to “hook the reader” with creative introductions for their writing pieces. They have also learned how to bolster their pieces by comparing their topic to another. For example, some wrote about how they felt Chuckie Cheese was better than McDonald’s or how dogs were better than Cats! Our friends then provided two persuasive reasons to convince their readers about their favorite topic. Next week our friends will be diving into the world of Poetry, which we are very excited about!
Reading
In these past couple of weeks, our friends continued to explore the fairytale genre and identifying the features that can be found within these books. Our friends have also been learning how to make inferences based off “hidden author messages.” Our friends were able to identify the central message of a Fairy Tale by identifying the problem and what the characters learn from the solution.
Math
Our 1A mathematicians have been so hard at work these last few weeks. We started off by discussing and counting all of the numbers up to 120. No easy feat. Most recently, we have moved on to adding together 2 digit numbers, making new numbers all the way to 100. Our 1A scholars have been working on new mathematical strategies such as redistribution. We have also furthered our investigation of money, now looking at the value of pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters. Our next step is to take on the subjects of time and subtracting 2 digit numbers.
Inquiry
What an exciting few weeks it has been in Inquiry! We have been continuing our study of celebrations, moving to the New Delhi, India. We started with the study of Diwali, the Festival of Lights and then moved on to Holi, the Indian celebration of Spring. The kids learned about the reasons it is celebrated as well as the traditions that go along with it. They were also able to create some fantastic splatter art used to represent the dye thrown during the Holi holiday. This past week we have turned our sights to Mexico and the Día de Los Muertos. The kids learned how the passing away of someone actually turns into a celebration of spirits. They decorated sugar skulls and learned about other traditions surrounding this holiday. We are so excited for our next investigation of the Brazilian holiday of Carnival.
