Block Printing History

Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. As a method of printing on cloth, the earliest surviving examples from China date to before 220, and woodblock printing remained the most common East Asian method of printing books and other texts, as well as images, until the 19th century.

Method

1. Draw the design you want to make on a piece of paper

2. Transfer your design onto the block you will be carving

3. Carve your design into the surface of the printing block

4. Proof your printing block by making several test prints

5. Prepare block and ink

6. Coat the surface of your block with a thin layer of ink

7. Press the block onto your fabric

8. let print dry

Evaluation

Block Printing is interesting to me because of the creative method, patterns and process of creating a block with various tools and techniques. Block printing is a very commonly used artistic and textile technique used to created fashionable/cultural patterns on fabrics.
