A Strong Sense of Self
Our vision statement begins with the lines "The vision for our school is for each child to develop:
A strong sense of self........." Have you ever wondered what exactly a strong sense of self is? Our sense of self includes the roles, attributes, behaviors, and associations that we consider most important about ourselves (Ylvisaker, 2006). "Examples of things that help to develop who we are as individuals can include our occupations, hobbies, affiliations, abilities, personality traits, and spiritual beliefs. Our identities and how we feel about ourselves is largely the result of our environment and immediate surroundings. For example, if you are a member of an encouraging and nurturing environment you are more likely to feel accepted and confident in your abilities." (https://www.virtuallabschool.org) At Great Expectations we intentionally provide an environment that fosters acceptance and respect, provides children the opportunity to have success with meaningful tasks during each developmental stage, and meaningful interactions with peers. These experiences provide the context to give and receive honest feedback, teach the value of persistence and how to cope with defeats.
Each year students are provided time to reflect on their sense of self and capture their current stage in artisticly. These artisitic expressions are shared during our annual Self-Portrait Night.

🆘"CAN" you help?🆘
We are in need of someone (or several folks) to be in charge of hauling aluminum can donations from the trailer on the Gunflint Trail to property on Devil Track Road once a week. We also need folks who are willing to help process cans. The cubes of crushed cans are then brought to the recycling center in Duluth. Money from cans goes toward the addition. Pictured to the right is about 1,000 lbs of processed aluminum cans.
Interested individuals need access to a pick up and trailer. If you can help please call Jerry Starr at 218-370-9496.
