Reading Workshop
This week in reading workshop the Maples had their first rounds of book showing in Compass' new shared library. Maples had the chance to pick books drew their attention and books that they can read on their own to bring home every day in their canvas book bags. Maples were also introduced to Reading Partners and engaged in small reading group sessions.
Writing Workshop
This week saw the Maples writing up a storm of small moment stories. The Maples learned how writing partners, like reading partners, help them tell better stories. They also practiced "unfreezing" their stories by adding motion and dialog to their writing. Through out the week Maples used their workshop time to build up their endurance and write for longer and longer stretches. On Friday the Maples had a small moment share, where students volunteered to read their stories (some with much feeling) to the class.
Math Workshop
This week the Maples started a new unit: Comparing and Combining Shapes. We started off by exploring pattern block shapes and attributes. Maples also began to look at shapes and see how they can be combined and broken apart. Maples applied this knowledge to fill in pattern block outlines using several sets of shapes.
Integrated unit: What Does "We are all in this together" mean?
This week we kicked off our first integrated unit "What Does 'We Are All in This Together' Mean?" Maples started by brainstorming a list of all of the people that work in Compass from teachers and administrators to students and families. In the coming weeks the Maples will be conducting interviews, drawing maps and portraits and engaging in other activities to explore how we are all together in our school community.
