ISTEP Testing
Tips for Parents during ISTEP Week:
- Make sure that your child gets to bed on time. Research shows that being well rested helps students do better on tests.
- Your child should eat a healthy, high protein breakfast each morning.
- Make sure your child gets up early enough so that they do not feel rushed in the morning.
- Please DO NOT schedule any appointments during testing times. If a student comes in late to school, they must wait until the test is over before they can go to class.
Yearbooks
Yearbooks have arrived! If you pre-ordered a yearbook, you child should already have brought it home this week. If you would like a yearbook but did not pre-order, we do have a limited amount for sale for $20. If you would like a yearbook, you can send in cash or check (made payable to Harrison Parkway.) Once the books are gone, we are not able to order any more. Thank you!

Riverside Intermediate Orientation
April 14, 2017
Dear Fourth Grade Students and Parents,
Riverside Intermediate School will be holding our annual parent orientation meeting for parents of incoming fifth grade students Monday, May 8, 2017. This meeting will be held in the school gymnasium and will begin at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is for you to hear about the intermediate school philosophy and how that translates into our daily operation, organization, programs, academic setting, and more.
You will also be able to meet the Assistant Principal, fifth grade counselor, some fifth grade teachers, and me (the Principal). Each year this proves to be a very beneficial meeting for parents to learn more about us, to ask questions, and to tour the building. We are excited to have around 480 fifth grade students coming to RSI next year!
Incoming fifth grade students will be traveling by bus to RSI for our student orientation that morning at 9:30 a.m.
I am looking forward to meeting with you and your child and sharing information about our school!
Professionally yours,
Danielle Chastain

Sand Creek Intermediate Orientation
Dear Fourth Grade Parents,
Next fall, your child will be a fifth grade student at Sand Creek Intermediate. Given that you may have some questions about the transition to a different building, we will have an orientation session for all parents of current fourth grade students on Monday, May 8. This program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and should last about one hour. Our orientation will give parents a good opportunity to meet each other and some of our faculty. We will also provide a brief building tour at the end of the orientation. If you have a student with Special Education Services and desire an opportunity to meet briefly with some of our special education staff, they will be available prior to our all-parent meeting from 6:30 – 7:00 pm. We encourage only parents to attend the parent orientation.
In addition, on Monday, May 8th, your son or daughter will ride a bus from their elementary school to Sand Creek Intermediate School for their student orientation. This program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end around 10:45 a.m. This orientation will give students the opportunity to meet new friends, interact with the Sand Creek staff, and tour the building as well. The student orientation is very similar to the orientation parents will experience on Monday night.
We hope that you can attend the parent orientation as this is an excellent opportunity for you to become comfortable with our building and learn more about the intermediate philosophy. We look forward to the exciting year ahead and for all of you to become an important part of the Sand Creek Intermediate family.
Sincerely,
Mr. Brent Farrell
SCIS Principal

Through the mediums of music, literature and creative writing, students will share the story of a Queen, King, Peter Piper and other characters. Second grade classes teamed up and wrote the stories last week. The narrative is helping our characters come to life!
Look for a second parent letter to come home early next week.

Through the medium of music, students will share their experiences and attempt to answer the age old question, "What is a Hoosier?"
The Virginia Reel, Fast Dance, Lighthouse Jam, Sneak up Song, and Basketball Rap are all in the works. Fourth grade students, Playlist DJ's, the Inquiry Team and the Marketing Team are all working hard to bring this program together.

Lunch with Students
If you are interested in having lunch with your student, you must call the office at 915-4210 before 9:30 am the day of your visit. We can only accommodate 10 visitors each day, so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, you must have a current background check on file with the school. You are welcome to order a school lunch, bring a sack lunch, or you can just sit and visit. Please do not bring fast food or soda, due to various student allergies. Per HSE Policy, pictures of students are not allowed to be taken in the cafeteria and please do not use cell phones during lunch. Thank you for supporting these policies.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. As a new feature this year, applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00 pm. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00 pm to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.

A Note for Car Riders
For families who drive their child to and/or from school, when you arrive at Harrison Parkway, please pull up behind the existing line-up of cars instead of cutting in front of a car that is already in line. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to ensure a safe environment.

HSE Preschool of the Natural Sciences
• Designed for children ages 3-5 years
• Days filled with the hands-on study of the natural sciences
• Curriculum Framework is based on the integration of the Indiana Academic Foundation Standards for Early Literacy and Early Mathematical Practice
The Preschool of the Natural Sciences for HSE Schools is based on the belief that children are naturally curious and eager to learn. This is a critical period of time for our youngest learners and an opportunity for our schools to support and push the growth of their cognitive development. This is accomplished by marrying authentic and thoughtful project work in the natural sciences areas with foundational academic skills. Our learners deserve a quality preschool experience in a school learning community that values, enhances, promotes and respects the intellectual and social-emotional growth of young children.
