From the Principal
Hello families! I hope you had a great week. Tomorrow we are so excited to broadcast our first Virtual Community Circle during crew time. Special thanks to our specials team, media specialist, and counselor for taking the lead on this one. We hope you enjoy it! Remember to send in submissions if you want to see your child featured.
Yesterday, we also had our first room parents meeting. We are so incredibly thankful for these parent volunteers who will support our teachers and help our students/families connect through some fun activities this year.
Thank you to the entire school community for the work being done to make virtual learning a success. We are Crew and it takes all of us to make this work. I am proud of the work we are all doing.
STAR Testing Update
Hello Families,
STAR Testing started today in Ms. Scott's Second Grade class and Ms. Hart's First Grade class. Today we're celebrating those students, teachers, and test proctors that participated in testing. STAR assessments help teachers better understand what students know and can do in the area of early literacy and reading.
Before your child takes his/her assessment, please take a few minutes to review the following:
- Watch this presentation from Oakhurst about STAR
- CSD's STAR Testing Family Information
- Family Guide for Remote Administration from Renaissance Learning
- Make sure your child shuts down his/her computer or device at the end of each school day.
Please remember:
It is OKAY to:
- Help your child log in to the test
- Provide testing support like headphones
- Make sure your child stays on task
- Help troubleshoot tech issues
- Read passages, questions, or answers to your child
- Help your child answer questions while taking the test
If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Aldridge: caldridge@csdecatur.net
Virtual Community Circle: Student Participation
During distance learning, Oakhurst would like to continue student participation in our Virtual Community Circles. If your child would like to participate, please record your child saying the Pledge of Allegiance (in English or Spanish) or telling a joke (loudly and clearly) and drop the recording in the appropriate folder. Please record your child in landscape view. We will also continue the "Ask Ms. Sanders" segment. If your child has a question for Ms. Sanders, please add it to the form below.
Nurse Notes
Whether virtual or in person, it is imperative we have your child's health information, including medical conditions, allergies, medications, etc. CSD has recently moved these forms to the parent portal. We ask that parents/guardians complete these forms and sign offs by September 15. To locate these online forms, log in to the parent portal and click on the 'More" link at the bottom left. The 'Annual Data Update' will be at the bottom of the screen. For more detailed information, please watch this video. Please note, if your child has a medical condition requiring a Care Plan for school (i.e. asthma, seizures, diabetes), they must be updated annually. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at Ddurham@csdecatur.net

From Safe Routes to School Leader Robyn Painter
Hi Oakhurst Families! Even though school is virtual and we're socially distant, we can still promote health, physical activity, and eco-friendly transportation options with our kids! Oakhurst's Safe Routes to School Committee's first Walk & Roll event of the year is next week on Wellness Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Don't forget to set aside some time to take a hike, take a bike ride, or just a stroll around our beautiful neighborhood! If you are keeping it local, you can pick up a prize (in a safe, socially-distant way) for your participating student in front of 332 Spring Street (at the corner of Oakhurst & Spring). Please register on our fb event page to post pictures and invite your friends!!! https://www.facebook.com/events/357939551882735/
