The Brightest Stars Shine at LRE! April 1, 2019
Child Abuse Awareness Month
National Child Abuse Prevention Month was first designated in April. Since those early days, the focus on recognition and prevention has widened to include promoting healthy parenting and strong families through education and community support.
At Luckey Ranch Elementary, we believe that every child has a right to a safe childhood free of violence, trauma, and abuse. April, Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, is an important time to start the conversation in our families and communities about how we can keep our children safe.
Children are impacted by trauma in a myriad of ways and these experiences are significant risk factors for poor health, academic failure, and ultimately, a poor quality of life. Schools, parents, and the community have a unique opportunity and responsibility to help these children recover from trauma and develop the skills necessary to experience academic and social success.
Parents and caregivers can help reestablish security and stability for these children in a number of ways.
Recognize and be sensitive to the fact that problem behaviors can be the manifestation of trauma-related anxiety
Help children manage their feelings by teaching and modeling effective coping strategies
Engage them in activities that stimulate the mind and body
Promote family activities to bring them closer to the ones they love
Maintain usual routines
Watch for changes in behaviors
Allow children to tell the story of the trauma they experienced, as they see it, so they can begin to release their emotions and make sense of what happened
Remind them repeatedly how much you care for them
Encourage and support them
Luckey Ranch Elementary will help all students feel safe, supported, a and connected. Please contact Rebecca Pinales, school counselor, for any questions or concerns regarding your child at rebecca.pinales@mvisd.org or 830-941-2243 ext. 2603.
STAAR Assessments Begin Next WEEK! 4th & 5th Grade
Next week your child will participate in the STAAR Test, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. On Tuesday, 4/9/19, fourth graders will test in the area of Writing and fifth graders will test in the area of Math. On Wednesday, all 5th graders will take the 5th grade Reading exam. We believe that your child has been well prepared for these tests and know that your child will do his/her best. In order for your child to start the day off right, here are a few tips:
The Night Before:
1. Be sure your child gets plenty of rest. Have your child’s television or electronic devices turned off one hour before bed to ensure your child sleeps well.
2. Let your child know that you believe in him/her. Encourage your child to take his/her time on the test.
3. Be sure to cancel any appointments that your child may have that would interfere with testing for the following day.
The DAY of the Test:
1. Be encouraging on the day of the test. Remind your child that he/she will do well
2. Refrain from stress on the morning of the test. Remember, your child may get anxious due to testing.
3. Eat a good breakfast. We serve breakfast at school, Encourage your child to eat at home and/or at school.
4. Have your child leave his/her backpack at home. Your child will not need it!
5. Remind your child that he/she will have to turn in their electronic devices (phone, watch, iPod, etc.) to their teacher. Any student who is found with an electronic device on them, may have their test cancelled. When the campus is finished with testing, electronic devices will be returned to students.
6. Finally, remember that the campus is closed to visitors during testing. This includes "Lunch with My Child."
Again, we appreciate your support and know that these tests will be a reflection of your child’s hard work! A huge “thank you” goes out to our teachers, staff, and parents who have encouraged all Luckey Ranch E.S. students.
