The New School Year (El nuevo año escolar)
As many of you already know, on Wednesday night it was decided that the Redwood City School District will begin the year with distance learning through at least mid-November (first trimester), but very possibly longer. The Board felt like there was too much risk for students and staff given the rising number of COVID-19 cases and the unknown long-term effects of having COVID-19.
I want to reiterate something that was said multiple times at the meeting, which is that distance learning last year will not be the same as distance learning this year. We were all in crisis mode and didn’t know the best way to go about things. We had to pivot very quickly and did not have time to fully think everything through. Also, not all staff were fully trained for teaching online.
Kennedy administration and staff learned a lot between March and June and had already been thinking about what would have to change if we started the year with distance learning. Now that we know this is the direction we are going, the admin team is working hard to figure out the details of this school year. While we liked that students had the freedom to complete their work on their own schedule, we found that for most students this didn’t work well. Generally, middle school students need structure. So as much as possible, we would like to have a daily “bell schedule” where students attend their classes at specific times each day to get synchronous, live instruction. We recognize that being in front of the computer to learn is more tiring, which means classes can’t be quite as long as classes normally are and there will need to be frequent breaks for both staff and students. We are keeping this in mind as we plan the schedule.
Given that our students have many different teachers, and teachers can have up to 170 students, we decided we needed a better way to keep track of students, check in on how they are doing academically, socially, emotionally, and physically, and therefore needed to have a better system in place to do this. As such, the beginning of the day will start with a homeroom class. This will be a time for announcements, social-emotional learning, to have teachers check in on academic progress, conference with students, provide academic support and time to work, etc. Students will have this teacher again for another subject sometime in the day.
We recognize that the social piece, which is very important to middle school students, lacks when students are at home. We are looking at ways to provide formal and informal opportunities for students to socialize and have fun.
I have lots more details to share and will do so in the next few weeks once we start working through all of the planning that needs to happen and get some answers to questions we have from District leadership.
Normally we send out a mailing with different flyers in July for the beginning of school. We still plan to do this, but it will come in early August and will have fewer flyers since fewer events will take place. We are trying to figure out what Maze Day will look like, so more details about this will be coming soon. Normally PTO and I work together to give you a calendar of events for the year ahead of time. This will not happen this year since things seem to change every day. Most big events have been canceled for now because we can’t have people on campus. It is very important that you and your student read the Cougar Connect every week to find out what is happening. I email it to students, too. (Those students new to RCSD won’t receive the first couple of Cougar Connects because they don’t have an RCSD email yet). I also want to give you a heads up that we do want hands-on activities like science labs, projects, etc., to still happen. This may mean that every couple of weeks we will need you to drive through Kennedy to pick up a bag of supplies.
I am excited for the new school year despite the many challenges we face. We are fully staffed, are planning to continue with electives and other things that make Kennedy special and enriching, and many teachers and admin have been attending professional development and/or planning throughout the summer to be ready in August. Please feel to reach out to me if you have questions, concerns, or need to speak with me about your student.
This Tuesday we will host a Second Harvest food distribution at 9:00 am in the Kennedy parking lot. Please see the flier below for more details.
We are still missing a lot of 6th grade elective forms. If you haven’t filled one out yet you have until this Wednesday, July 22. Below are the links to the elective catalogue and form.
If you are in 7th or 8th grade and are new to Kennedy, please email me (sadler@rcsdk8.net) with your top six elective choices. This form is closed. 7th and 8th graders who did not complete the form will have their elective chosen for them since students had all of May and June to complete it.
Since everything was so crazy in May, we were not able to test incoming 6th graders who are interested in an accelerated math placement. We now need this information to finish our scheduling. It has been recommended that we only place those who had an overall high score of a 4 on the fourth grade SBAC into the accelerated pathway. (A “high 4” corresponds to certain scaled scores students received). These students will be notified this week about placement.
For those who scored a lower 4 or had a score of an overall 3, Kennedy decided it will still give them a chance to test in. (Kennedy admin will give up some of their vacation time to make this happen in the next two weeks). Please look for an email from me on Monday to sign up for a time slot to take the test. The test will take about an hour. If you don’t want your student to accelerate then no need to take the test. Most of our students test/place into the grade-level math class. We will administer the test online with a small group of students at a time. More details to come in the email. If you are new to Kennedy and RCSD I will reach out to you separately this week.
Yearbooks, Art, PE Clothes, etc. (Anuarios, arte, ropa de educación física, etc.)
We know many of you still haven’t picked up your yearbook, art, PE clothes, etc. from the last school year. In the Cougar Connect next weekend, we will announce some additional dates and times you can come pickup and/or return items. Right now everyone is on vacation and admin can’t pop in again to do this because we really need to focus on scheduling and other pertinent things for the start of school.
