IB Acronym of the Month - EE (Extended Essay)

What is the EE?

It is an independent piece of research, culminating with a 4,000-word paper.

The extended essay provides:

  • practical preparation for undergraduate research
  • an opportunity for students to investigate a topic of personal interest to them, which relates to one of the student's six Diploma Programme (DP) subjects, or takes the interdisciplinary approach of a World Studies extended essay.

Through the research process for the extended essay, students develop skills in:

  • formulating an appropriate research question
  • engaging in a personal exploration of the topic
  • communicating ideas
  • developing an argument.

Participation in this process develops the capacity to analyze, synthesize and evaluate knowledge.

Seniors are currently DONE with their EEs and Juniors will begin theirs during second quarter. Click here to view exemplar essays that have been graded, annotated, and published by IB.

Student Spotlights

Mina Salonius (9th)- Thinker

Mina has such an inquisitive mind. She always tries to take her understanding of the material a step further and apply the concepts outside of the classroom. She comes in with a lot of enthusiasm and ready to learn.

Hailey Bradshaw (12th) - Principled

Hailey holds herself to high standards and works hard to reach her own goals. Despite many challenges from injuries, to a busy lifestyle, Hailey pushes through any obstacles in front of her to complete all obligations she has committed to.

Virginia Peery (12th)- Inquirer

Virginia has really embraced the spirit of the Extended Essay—she demonstrates a passionate sense of curiosity and has taken great pride in her research. She is a fantastic model of a student who strives to learn independently, moving beyond minimum expectations of learning.

Jameson Gilliam, Sophia Nguyen, Will Lloyd, John Zorn (11th)- Communicators & Reflective

These students have volunteered to lead our 11th grade TOK classes through a class CAS project providing classroom supplies and resources to IB schools in the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Dorian. They have been wonderful in communicating with the affected schools and outside volunteers, coordinating collection efforts, and logistics for supply delivery. We are very proud of their effort and tenacity!

CAS Project Highlights

Emma Simes- Writing Fair

In this project, I hope to work cooperatively with other IB students to create an event dedicated to students who enjoy reading, writing, and other literature-related topics. I want to create a communal safe space where students' works and ideas can be spread and shared among those interested in helping create and encourage a love for writing and reading alike.

Maya Albold- Women's March

In this project, I organized a team of student activists to hold a march and rally dedicated to women's reproductive health and freedom. Responsibilities included managing social media platforms, advertising the march in various locations, establishing a partnership with an international organization, creating signage for the event, tabling at the event, and coordinating event logistics

Anish Kallikuri- Nease Benches

My project was to fundraise enough money to build 2 benches for Nease High School near the bus loop in order to reduce student traffic and provide a nice area for students to sit. It also helps by getting kids out of the way of teachers who are trying to get to their cars before the buses leave.

Taylor Hampson- 5K for K9 for Warriors

We are raising money to benefit K9S FOR WARRIORS, INC, and any donation or ticket purchase will help make an impact. A group of high school students set out to create a 5K and Fun Run on Veterans' Day to support our local non-profit organization. We will be hosting this event on November 11, 2019.

Andrew Knee- Web Application for Bus Transportation at Nease

With this project, we will create an application that will help our school with a certain task. This could be making various applications for different purposes that makes the administration of the school easier or helps the education of other students.

IB Socials are Underway!

6 IB Socials are planned throughout the year to allow IB students the opportunity to relax, have fun, and spend with time all class levels.

Congratulations to Grayson Eastman
