What we Learned this week:
Writing: Students learned about how we use CER in various subjects like reading, social studies, and science. We also learned how to use science tools to collect quantitative and qualitative data to use in evidence.
Social Studies: Students continued their exploration of Mesopotamia with a look at government systems and codes of laws.
Reading: Students started learning about thinking maps and how written texts are organized. This helps us go into our organizational patterns unit and supplements their writing curriculum. In our guided reading block, we started to look at and select biographical texts for our first literature circle groups.
What we are learning next week:
Writing: This week, we are working on expanding our understanding of CER.
Social Studies: We will be concluding our first Social Studies unit this week with a project-based CSA. The students will be creating a project based on the question: How do the first world civilizations still have impacts today?
Reading: Students will continue learning about thinking maps and how they can help organize a text.
Fall Parent/teacher Conferences
The link to sign up for fall conferences will be sent on Monday 9/18 when it goes live. We would love to see all our families that week.

D.A.R.E. begins September 18th
D.A.R.E. is a comprehensive K-12 prevention education program taught in thousands of schools in America, as well as many other countries. Taught by highly trained law enforcement officers, D.A.R.E. Education Programs deliver science/evidence-based curricula that teach students good decision-making skills that will help them lead safe and healthy lives and cope with high risk circumstances including drugs, alcohol, violence, bullying, and internet safety.
D.A.R.E. will be every Monday during the school day for 10 weeks. At the conclusion of the program, there will be a graduation for the 6th graders.
Spirit Fridays!
Please encourage your student to wear GSH gear/blue or yellow clothing on Fridays. Each class is working to have the most students in spirit wear to try and win a special prize.
Congratulations to Mrs. Johnson's class for winning the spirit award for last Friday!
Word of the Month

Please only practice the 6th grade skills. If you would like more targeted practice, students have skills listed in their Proficiency Scales book for each standard we cover in sixth grade.
