Thoughts from the Lucy Calkins Conference

Lucy started the conference with reminding us that knowledge is doubling at incredible rates. In 1900, knowledge doubled every 10 years. Currently knowledge is doubling every 13 months and soon it will be doubling every 12 hours.


This means that teachers are no longer the people who deliver knowledge. We simply can't. Now a teacher's job is utterly different. It used to be to deliver knowledge. Now a teacher has to teach kids to access, analyze, question, be skeptical of, infer, compare, and synthesize knowledge. This is a huge job and one that is incredibly different.


No too long ago, it was our job to teach kids to learn knowledge. We are faced with an enormous challenge now. By using "what is best for kids" and our Principles of Learning, we can dig in and move our teaching further down the continuum of teaching for deeper learning.


I applaud you as you meet in your grade level teams to build stronger units of study. I applaud you as you grapple with common assessments. I applaud you as you determine acceptable evidence and look at student work. This is what will move us forward. This is what will guarantee our students continue to learn and grow.


Let's keep rolling up our sleeves and have the kind of professional discourse where we learn and grow, look for the best way to support our students, and find ourselves doing the very kind of thinking we want our students to do.

Growth Mindset Thoughts

WIth more and more research around trauma, we must pay attention to how childhood trauma impacts children. The article below gives a brief perspective. Please read as numerous strugglers at CRES might be kids who have dealt with trauma. The more we know, the better we support.
