Blake Updates
June 21, 2020
Final Update of 19-20
While we do not know what next year will bring, we do know that as a community we will make great things happen for our students. As we prepare for next year we will be focusing on out theme of #OneTeamOneGoal, no limits! We will be looking at how we continue to bring our community together in and out of school to support the growth and development of each and every one of our students as One Team! We will be working this summer to plan for the possibility of an online return, in person return, and possible mix of the two. As of right now we do not know what August will look like, but we will be ready.
Thank you all for a great year. I wish you a safe and healthy summer and I am looking forward to working with all of you again in the fall!
Material Drop off and Retrieval
Students will be returning any school or MCPS materials or items they have except chromebooks. Students in grades 9-11 will keep chromebooks for the summer.
Students will be able to pick up items that staff have retrieved from hall lockers, PE lockers and classrooms. Students who ordered yearbooks will also get their yearbooks at this time.
The details are below followed by the schedule and a map of the process.
- Material Prep-Students should gather all items that need to be returned to Blake. STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-11 ARE NOT RETURNING CHROMEBOOKS AT THIS TIME. Students should put a sheet of paper on/in each item they are returning that includes their name and student ID number.
- You will also need a sheet of paper where you write your name in large print on it that will be used during material pick up.
- Bag Materials- Students should place all materials that are being returned in a bag large enough and strong enough to hold the materials they are returning
- Find Your Time- Using the chart below identify the day and time that you are assigned to come by last name.
- Drop Off- You will start by going through the student parking lot. Each car will pull up to the drop off area, one person can get out of their car and place their bag of return items on the sidewalk in the drop off area. If you have nothing to pick up you may exit through the Johnson Road exit to avoid traffic.
- Pick Up- You will remain in your car. If you have items to pick up you will proceed through the front parking lot to the area down by the counseling office. When you arrive you will show the staff there the sheet of paper with your name on it and open your trunk. The staff will retrieve your items from the cafeteria and place them in your trunk.
- All traffic will exit through Johnson Road
Summer School
- For Credit Summer School- An online version of traditional summer school is being offered by the school system. Students can take courses for initial credit or they can take courses that they would like to repeat to improve grades. You can find information about the credit bearing summer school here.
The other option of summer school are the courses that Blake is offering. These are non-credit bearing courses that are FREE. They fall into two areas:
- Math Boost Courses- These courses (pending enrollment) will be run by Blake staff. These courses are an opportunity for students to strengthen their math skills prior to next school year. Courses are three weeks long and students will be expected to connect with their teacher at least three times a week for at least 45 minutes a session. Students will also have to complete work outside of that time. The material that is covered during these sessions is personalized to each student based on their performance on a pre-assessment.
- Enrichment Courses- In addition to the math boost classes Blake HS is offering 6 enrichment courses for students. The first option, High School 101 is only open to incoming 9th graders. However, the remaining five, Game Development Workshop, Positive Psychology and Mental Well Being, Human Rights and Advocacy, Spanish Language and Culture, and Our World in French is open to all Blake students.
