AMHS Weekly Update

September 5, 2022- September 9,2022

The Environment as an Integrated Context (EIC)

Arabia Mountain High uses EIC (The Environment as an Integrating Context) instructional model. The EIC model was developed by the State Education and Environmental Roundtable (SEER) and seeks to improve student achievement through hands-on learning using both local natural and community surroundings. Students at Arabia are required to complete 20 service-learning hours. Service-learning is directly linked to the academic curriculum, making meaningful connections to Arabia Mountain’s educational goals. In contrast to community service, service-learning is an instructional methodology that combines academic endeavors with meeting identified community needs. Through service-learning activities, students apply subject area content and skills in authentic settings. This real-world context provides opportunities for students to work directly in our local environment, promoting the development of active participation and responsibility. Through service-learning activities, students discover that they can play an important role and make a significant difference in the community.

Next week will be our first B-week for the 22-23 school year. During B-weeks students will follow the modified A/B Block Schedule. This week due to the Labor Day Holiday, students will report to 2nd, EIC, 4th, and 6th periods on Tuesday and Thursday and 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th periods on Wednesday and Friday. Students can check their schedules in Infinite Campus for their EIC class assignments. The EIC class locator is also posted at the school for our students. EIC projects will engage students in the research process and promote the use of 21st Century Learning Skills (Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity) that will help students think critically and connect with prior knowledge while at the same time generating curiosity as they learn and apply new concepts.

Students will receive a summative grade (test/major project grade) in one of the following core subjects by grade level:

9th grade: Mathematics

10th grade: Science

11th grade: English

12th grade: Social Studies

Please encourage your student to actively engage in their EIC research project this school year.
