AVID
Charting the Text is a way for students to develop questions and come up with logical answers while reading a text. To do this, students would split the article into paragraphs. On the left side, label the margin What does the author say? Then on the right side, label the margin What does the author do? For each paragraph, the student would be able to point out the main ideas of what the author is saying about the topic. Then on the right side, the student can highlight how this occurred. Here are some example questions for the left side: • What is this section about? • What did I learn from this paragraph? • What information is being presented? Here are some examples of what authors do in paragraphs. When articulating what an author is doing, begin with a verb. • Giving an example… • Sharing an anecdote… • Summarizing research… • Reflecting on a process… • Contrasting one idea to another… Using the AVID strategy of charting the text helps the student become a better reader, as well as help them develop their sense of Inquiry.

Get to Know ... Lindsay Davini
Hello! My name is Lindsay Davini and this is my 14th year teaching at Thompson Junior High School. During my years at Thompson I have taught 8th ELA, 8th iELA, 7th Honors ELA, and have coached track. I also am one of the NJHS co-sponsors, and I absolutely love getting to work with students to help better our school and community.
When I am not at school, I love spending time with my family. I have 3 little boys, James (7), Tommy (4), and Paulie (3 months). My husband loves to build things in the backyard for our boys to do, so right now we are working on our ice rink to get ready for some outdoor winter fun! When the boys are sleeping, I love to read, play cards, and watch cheesy reality tv shows.
Get to Know ... Nancy Jansen
Hello, I am Nancy Jansen. I have taught the Family Consumer Science and Family Life Resource classes at Thompson for the past 17 years. I grew up in Winona, Minnesota. My educational journey began at UW-Stout in Menomonie, WI where I received a degree in Vocational Rehabilitation. Many years later I decided to return to school at Northern Illinois University to obtain a teaching degree, I continued on for my masters degree at University of St. Francis in Joliet.
Teaching at Thomson is wonderful! I love that I am able to teach junior high students skills they can use for a lifetime! In my free time I enjoy using those skills--cooking, sewing, baking, quilting, etc.. I also enjoy spending time with my family. My husband and I will celebrate our 40th anniversary in August, we have 3 adult children.
I look forward to seeing students in my classroom again soon!

Oswego Public Library Cards
Getting access to these resources is EASY! Just fill out the attached Google Form. After you complete it, Ms. Buan will contact you with access instructions and the library card number. IT’S THAT EASY! :) The library card number will be active as soon as you receive it, and will expire on June 1, 2021. Please be sure to complete the form for every child in your household who attends Thompson, so that we may give each child her/his own library card number. Information on obtaining cards for elementary and high school students will come from the elementary and high school librarians. In addition to immediate access to the digital library, students will also have the option to visit either campus of the library to get “physical” access to books, movies, video games, etc. Information on how to access these resources will be sent to you along with the library card number.
