Summer bridge programs offer nontraditional learning time
Caldwell Families
As you likely know, all of our schools are hosting summer bridge programs. (A media outlet wrote a story about the program at Sacajawea.) I'm sharing photos of just some of exciting hands on activities happening in our buildings this month.
It's a joy to visit and to see our students and teachers reconnecting in fun and engaging lessons. It's also been an opportunity for students making transitions next fall -- fifth grade to middle school and 8th grade to high school -- to meet their teachers and navigate their new school in a low-stress way.
I appreciate our staff who willingly offered to do the extra work to provide these opportunities for our students.
These programs are possible thanks to new federal funding available for the next three years to support our students learning needs.
Earlier this week, we shared with the school board some of the immediate plans for this funding including:
- Continue 22 certified staff positions to support smaller class sizes and instructional coaches for every school
- Upgrade, repair or replace heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Replace windows to allow for fresh air at various schools
- Provide staff or additional staff hours for social emotional, special education, and custodial services.
More programs for students?
We're also exploring whether our families would like to see free extended learning opportunities such as the summer bridge programs or perhaps providing after school programs. Please take this short survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CSDESSREng

The change was recommended by the administration in light of the low number of positive COVID cases in the community.
Expanding community schools next year
Parents who don't have children in Sacajawea Elementary may not know the school is our first "community school."
A few years ago, we partnered with United Way to use this strategy to organizing community resources around student success.
This approach recognizes that schools are hubs that can connect our students and families with services and activities they need.
Hortensia Hernandez, previously of United Way, coordinated the work at Sacajawea for more than three years. This spring, she accepted a job to lead the effort to expand this strategy in other schools starting with Washington and Lincoln Elementary Schools next year.
