Winter Weather and Winter Clothes

With our first arctic blast of the school year, we want to remind everyone that we go outside for recess anytime the temperature (and wind chill) register above zero. The fresh air and fun in the snow is good getting our minds ready to learn.

Having the right winter outerwear and gear is important for all students. Boots, snowpants and coats should be worn every day so playing in the snow is comfortable. When purchasing gloves, look for gloves that are waterproof or dry quickly. When students wear wet gloves outside, fingers can get very cold. Please make sure your child's name is written in all of the individual pieces of gear.

If you need any help in getting equipment for your child, please let someone in the office know. Also, remind your child to check the lost and found FREQUENTLY for lost items.

Principal's Note - Professional Learning Communities

We are always trying to get better at serving all students and families.

Last newsletter, I mentioned a little bit about the work we are doing to improve teaching and learning here at Hillcrest. This week, I'd like to give a little more detail about what we mean by PLCs - Professional Learning Communities.

Twice a month, all teachers come together to review student data and plan instruction to meet the needs the data is showing us we have. This allows for collaboration between grade levels and it provides an opportunity for teachers to have more minds thinking through how we can meet student needs. These PLC meetings help ensure that our instruction is targeted and effective. We measure our growth based on how many students show proficiency in the skill we are focusing on.

We spend time looking at literacy and math data but we also take time to look at data related to belonging, emotional well-being and social skills. We know success requires us to look at children as a whole human being, capable of so much and naturally wired to learn!

4th and 5th Grade Concert - November 21st

This is a friendly reminder about our annual fourth and fifth grade concert which will be held in the Hillcrest Gym on Thursday, November 21st at 6:30 p.m. All are invited, whether or not you have a student at Hillcrest! The title of our concert is “Building Hope” The dress rehearsal will be earlier in the day at 9:30 a.m. Parents or relatives who are not able to attend the evening concert are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal. It is important that all fourth and fifth grade students attend the evening concert. You will not want to miss it! HERE is a note from Mrs. Runingen with additional reminders.

Middle School Information Night

If your child will be attending Horning Middle School next year or if you are considering the Flight Academy for your middle school experience, please see THIS FLYER for more information.

Brownie Troop 10484 of Hillcrest Elementary is collecting new and gently used coats for men, women and children from November 1st - November 26th (bins are located near door #2 and the gym). All collected donations will be delivered to the Hope Center and distributed to those in need within the Waukesha community to ensure that everyone can be warm this winter.
