Welcome Letter 2017-2018
August 2017
Dear Big Spring High School Students and Parents/Guardians:
I hope you and your family had a restful and rewarding summer. It is going to be a great school year and we are working hard to prepare for the start of the year. The purpose of this letter is to give you and your family information on important dates and other items that you will find useful.
Tuesday, August 15th, 2017, is “Dawg Day” for our rising 9th graders beginning at 1:00 p.m. Parents and guardians of these students are invited to a meeting in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m. for an informational meeting regarding specific student needs and transition. Open House begins at 7:30 p.m. on this same night for all students and their families. Student schedules may be accessed in Aspen or parents can stop into the office to receive assistance as needed.
School begins on Tuesday, August 22rd for all Big Spring students. Classes for our vocational education students at the Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School begin on Wednesday, August 23rd. CPAVTS students will report to Homeroom/Advisement at Big Spring at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 22, until dismissed to the Auditorium for a class meeting. Please note the new bell schedule printed on the back of this letter.
Seniors who have Senior Privilege (late arrival/early release) should come to school at the regular time the first two days of school in order to participate in homeroom/advisement activities.
The annual health survey will be both sent home with students and emailed directly to parents. We would ask that this important paperwork gets back to our nurses as soon as possible so the students' health needs can be met and communicated as needed to building staff.
Parent technology training for using Aspen and Flextime Manager will be held in the Library during Open House. Those parents who may need assistance in obtaining their Aspen login should contact the District Office at 776-2000.
Our District and Building web pages at www.bigspringsd.org are great resources for information, forms, and upcoming events. Additionally, School District and High School policies can be found on the BSSD website as well. We encourage you to update your parent email address in the Aspen Family Portal so you can receive future electronic communications.
In closing, we greatly appreciate your ongoing support and we are looking forward to serving you and your student(s) this school year.
William J. August
High School Principal

Flextime: What is it? Flextime is a student selected period within our daily schedule. Students use a program called, Flextime Manager to schedule themselves for extra help, clubs, make up work sessions, previewing and acceleration, AP test preparation, and a number of different activities. Each student will need to pick the lunch period they wish to attend, along with two academic or club sessions during our 3rd period block. Additionally, teachers are able to request those students they need to see as well. Parents can assist students in choosing their activities to allow for the most efficient use of this time by logging in with their students. A parent training on how Flextime Manager works will be held during Back to School Night/Open House at 7:30 in the H.S. Library. | Immunization Reminder for seniors Just another reminder that all seniors will need updated immunizations to remain in school past the first 5 days. This is a mandate from the State, and we would recommend communicating with our school nurses as needed to fulfill this requirement. | Homecoming Date Change: Oct. 13/14 Big Spring's Homecoming activities (Football Game and Dance) will be held the weekend of Oct. 13/14. This is a change from information that may have been included on the school calendar. |

P.E. Uniforms All high school students will be expected to wear Big Spring Physical Education attire. The attire is a maroon and gold shorts and shirt combination with a Bulldog logo. The shorts/shirt combination is made of moisture management, “performance” clothing. The cost of the shorts/shirt combination is $20.00. The school will work with families in financial need regarding costs. The Health and Physical Education Department is moving to standard physical education attire for several reasons: 1. Safety- The PE clothing is designed for freedom of movement and minimal liability for injury (no pockets, zippers, belt loops, etc.) 2. Appropriate- No appropriate attire questions, students cannot lose class points/credit with the school approved shirt/shirts. 3. Affordability- For this competitive cost, students may be able to wear one or both parts of the uniform throughout much or all of their high school years. 4. School Spirit- Big Spring Bulldog logo and colors for everyone! Ordering Instructions: Uniforms can be ordered through the P.E. department or directly from the vendor. There is no cost for the ID to parents and buying a picture package is not mandatory. | Student transportation during the first week of school Bus assignments will be available in Aspen, and postcards with bus information will not be mailed home. Kindergarten parents will receive mailings with bus information. There will be construction on a number of bridges within the District that will begin just in time for the start of school.
