Donate Life Kentucky High School Challenge
Did you know that more than 1,000 Kentuckians need a lifesaving transplant? One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and one tissue donor can heal more than 50 lives. Collins HOSA is participating in the 2019 Donate Life Kentucky High School Challenge to promote organ donation, and sign up individuals for the Kentucky Donor Registry. If you are interested in helping us save lives, talk to a HOSA student for more information, or please visit https://registerme.org/campaign/collins.

Border Battle Preview
Collins High School is hosting the Border Battle on Oct. 17th which will feature the second inter-school district competition in Kentucky state history. The Shelby County School District’s Team Shelby (Collins and Shelby County) will battle the Oldham County School District’s Team Franklin (North Oldham and South Oldham). The meet will be held on the Bullskin Course at Blue Meadow Farms (Joyes Station Rd. and US 60) in Shelbyville.
Collins Director of Cross Country and Track George Sanderlin developed the Bullskin Course over a year ago. He said, “One of our objectives at Collins is to put the ‘Oomph’ back into cross country and track. I put together a Border Battle in track in Georgia with the Atlanta Public School district battling the DeKalb County school district. It was a big hit. However, in cross country, this is new to Kentucky. Our Bullskin Course has been sought out by collegiate teams. The meet should be very competitive as the teams have already faced each other in several meets like the Shelby Co. Invitational and Rumble in the Jungle.”
In the girls’ race, the top pick is sophomore Kelsey King from South Oldham. Her season best of 19:21 earned her a top 20 (19th) finish at Greater Louisville. She will be chased by North Oldham sophomore Katie Giles (19:33) who got her season best with a second place finish at Rumble. North Senior Emma Hupp (20:03) could also be a threat.
The boys’ race is shaping up to be a doozie as the top ten entrants have all gone under 17:30. The race will feature some of the top teams in the state as South Oldham (3A), North Oldham (2A), and Collins (2A) all are ranked in the state’s top-ten. The South Oldham pair of junior Theo Bachmann (16:23) and senior Nathan Quinn (16:26) will be challenged by Collins senior Nolan Thomas (16:37). Bachman, who won the Indian Creek Invitational is fresh off a top 20 finish at Greater Louisville. Quinn was second at Indian Creek. Thomas had a top-ten finish at Nike Valley and is fresh off of a third place finish at the Rebellion Classic. South senior Seth Vorseth (third at Indian Creek) should also be a factor.
The girls’ race starts at 5:45 PM with the boys going at 6:20.

We are looking for hosts for incoming exchange students, arriving next fall for the following school year. Hosts commit to room and board only, as students come with their own insurance and spending money. As their coordinator, I will help with initial paperwork, secure the school slot, and maintain the placement all year. Right now , we have Hanna from Norway who wants to join the choir and likes hiking and working with kids. Or, there’s Mads from Denmark who is into soccer, or Morris from Germany who is a junior fireman in his town, and specializes in trampoline jumping. All speak great English, but need you to host them!! Contact me with any questions/interest. Sally Crespo at 502-593-0318 or sunbeam916@yahoo.com.

Holiday Assistance
Simpsonville Baptist Church 6th Annual Toy Store
By invitation only-contact the Youth Service Center
Mission: offer families a dignified shopping experience where we offer a hand up, not a handout.
Target Population: families that make "too much" money to qualify for assistance, but still struggle financially and could use a hand up. Single parents, grandparents raising grandkids, etc.
How does our store work? Families are given the opportunity to “shop” in our store filled with NEW toys that have been donated from the community. The toys are discounted to nearly one fifth of their retail value, giving parents/guardians the opportunity to shop for their own children at a discounted price. Our store does not make a profit, all of the money that is collected goes back into the store to buy more toys.
