Blake McMeans Speaks to D-B EXCEL Students

This week, DBE students had the privilege to listen to Blake McMeans speak about his life. Blake McMeans was once one of the nation’s top-ranked high school tennis players until one tragic incident changed the course of his life forever.

One the night of Nov. 10, 1994, Blake went drinking with his future fraternity brothers just off of UT’s campus, then got into his car to drive home. Just after 2 a.m. and just ½-mile away from home, Blake drove his car into an embankment, hitting trees along the way and flipping his car three times. Once emergency personnel arrived to the scene, Blake was immediately airlifted to UT medical center, where doctors and surgeons fought to keep Blake alive.

Now, Blake is back at center court in a whole new way. Through his nonprofit, the Blake McMeans Foundation and Promise Tour, Blake educates young adults about the dangers of drinking and driving in the hopes of preventing them from making the same life-altering mistake he did.

To learn more about Blake, his story, and his foundation visit his website at blakemcmeans.com.

Thank you to Ron Matthews of State Farm for helping D-B EXCEL be a host to Blake McMeans!

KCS Back the Blue Day

Kingsport City Schools has designated Wednesday, November 1, 2017 as “KCS Back the Blue Day.” Members of the Kingsport Police Department (KPD), KCS Student Resource Officers (SROs) and KPD K-9 Units will be honored in a variety of ways for their ongoing service to the students and staff of Kingsport City Schools.

“We are so thankful for the service that the women and men of the Kingsport Police Department provide Kingsport City Schools on a daily basis,” said KCS Interim Superintendent Dr. Dwain Arnold. “The partnership of KCS and KPD helps to provide the safest possible environment for our children and employees. Back the Blue Day is just one way for us to say thank you to the Kingsport Police Department for all they do to protect our community.”

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to wear blue on November 1 to show support of KPD. Photos and videos will be posted throughout the day on district (Facebook/Twitter) and school (Twitter) social media sites using the national hashtag, #BacktheBlue.

Officers are invited to visit schools during the day and the KCS/KPD School Resource Officer program will be highlighted in the WeAreKCS.com “Saturday Six” Blog with an accompanying video.

The EXCEL Echo

The EXCEL Echo is a student driven online magazine that highlights monthly happenings at D-B EXCEL. Students work within a small editorial team to create updates, exposes, and reviews, and anything else the team deems relevant and newsworthy. Combined with photographs, monthly puzzles, and whatever the staff finds edible for the readers, the Echo is proving to be a fun new way to host a journalism course in the digital age.
