Principal Message
We would like to thank everyone who helped to make our carnival such a huge success. It was great to see so many parents, staff, and parent/community volunteers that made this event possible. Our business partners and staff also stepped up in providing great donations for our auction. We are very fortunate here at Gleason.
Please remember how important it is to have students at school throughout this last nine week period. We still have lots of curriculum to teach and end of year assessments to complete. Our goal is to have every student reach their full potential by the end of the school year. We believe we can do it with your support.
We are very excited to extend an invitation to attend end of year celebrations for your child. Please refer to our upcoming events section of the newsletter for the dates. Preregistration will be sent home in May. Please look for additional information to follow.
If you know your student will not be here May 30th, please send a self-addressed/stamped envelope in order for us to mail your child’s report card to you.
Please read the flyer below for important information about “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”

Name That Book
The Book Genies competed in the Region/District competition on March 26. They were amazing answering 7 out of 10 clues correctly. Immediately after the competition they started planning for next year. We are very proud of their dedication and hard work and they indeed made us #gleasonproud.
*Book Genies include Sophia Selindis, Mikayla Huynh, Cassie Lin, Katelynn Linden Fernanda Martinez, Jewel Taylor, and not pictured Anais Jouffron
Overdue Books
Starting this month, students will receive written notice of overdue books. Please help your student locate these books so they can be returned in a timely manner.
PBIS NEWS
We had another successful raffle where the students could chose to put their Tiger Bucks into a raffle box for a chance to win the prize. We appreciate you continuing to promote ROAR behavior to help with your child's success! Staff also receive "Staff Cash" that can be used for incentives. If you notice a staff member going above and beyond and having positive behavior and you would like to reward them, please stop in at the front desk and write them a note on the staff cash. We'll make sure they receive it from you.
From the Counselor....Mrs. Salazar
The best thing you as a parent can do to help your child do his/her best on the STAAR test is to provide positive support by expressing confidence in your child’s ability to do their best. Let that be your expectation, as well. Children should know that test scores are important, but are not the measure of your love and acceptance of them.
On test days, try to provide a calm, stress-free environment as your child gets ready. Get up in plenty of time to avoid the morning rush to prevent extra nerves. Avoid nighttime extra-curricular activities and outings that may interfere with getting to bed by 8:00-9:00 p.m. Eat a healthy breakfast. Practice these tips now, so test day is just another day that your child is showing his/her knowledge. Help reinforce the following test-taking tips and strategies:
- Have a positive attitude and believe in yourself!
- Relax by taking deep breaths, stretching or take brief mind breaks.
- Try your best by showing all of your strategies.
- Dress comfortably and in layers.
After the test, reward your child for your confidence that he or she showed their best effort. Help your child remember if there is a 2nd day of testing.

Grade Level News
Pre-Kindergarten
We are learning all about the spring season during the month of April! In literacy, we are starting to make predictions about our text and answering questions about our characters like how they feel and why they feel that way. We are beginning to learn how to use letters to make words or parts of words. In writing, we are learning to write words or short sentences using some letter-sound correspondence, using beginning and ending sounds. In math, we are using verbal ordinal numbers (1st-5th), rote counting from 1-30, and identifying of the common shapes (such as circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and rhombus). We are looking forward to our Pre- K Outdoor Station on April 18th. Please look for additional information being sent home next week in your child’s take home folder.
Kindergarten
We are learning so much in Kindergarten. In reading, we are becoming avid readers. We are learning about the characteristics between avid readers and blah readers. We are inquiring about our “world book” and asking wonder questions and sharing our findings with one another. In writing, we are continuing to write how to stories. We will learn how to write a story step by step. As writers, we are still working on the conventions of writing such as having capital letters at the beginning of our sentence, spell our high frequency words correctly, and punctuation at the end of our sentences. In math, we will be identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes. We are still reviewing the following math skills: identifying coins, measurement, counting to 100, more and fewer, making combinations up to 10, and counting forward and backward from 1 to 20. Please remember to send a healthy snack and water bottle with your child daily. Thank you!
First Grade
First Grade is looking forward to April!
In math will begin to learn the names of select 3-D solids in the prism and rounded solid families as well as and how to count the vertices, edges, and faces of these solids. We will also explore more efficient ways to add and subtract numbers and begin reviewing previous content for our final Math District Progress Monitoring assessment in May.
In reading we will study some of our favorite authors. We will explore notable characteristics of the books they write as well as their writing style. We will also focus on specific characters and identify the characteristics that define their personalities as well as track their feelings and how they motivate their actions throughout the book and series in which they appear.
In writing we will explore poetry. We will look at various types of poetry and begin to write our own by utilizing our 5 senses to describe. We will review how to write a small moment (personal narrative) story to prepare for our End of Year District Progress Monitoring writing piece.
Second Grade
2nd graders are studying authors in reading. They are comparing and contrasting books that the authors write. We are also studying the author's craft and having conversations with our reading partners. In writing, we are finishing up our informational text writing. The students have had a great time researching a topic and creating their own informational text book. Next, we will be writing personal narrative stories. In math, students are learning about time. Ask your child to read your analog clocks at home and see how much they know! In science, we are learning about plants, animals and life cycles.
Third Grade
It’s hard to believe it’s April already! Our students have been working so hard all year long and have made tremendous gains throughout the year. In reading, we are wrapping up our biography unit. Students have enjoyed exploring different historical figures and learning more about what made them important. This month, we will be reviewing for our STAAR test by doing fun review rotations.
In writing, students have enjoyed writing essays and going through the process a real writer would go through. Students will dive deeper into essays by learning how to develop body paragraphs and organize their ideas as writers. Students will then take their End of Year writing and revising and editing DPM on April 15-17. Towards the end of the month, we will immerse students into feature articles where students will develop research questions about a topic, gather information, and write an article about that topic. We can’t wait to see our authors at work!
Fourth Grade
Mathematicians will begin their work on data analysis and elapsed time. Students will analyze dot plots, frequency tables, and determine the amount of time that has passed. We will also begin reviewing the skills covered this year in preparation for our Math STAAR Test on Monday, May 13th.
In Science, students are finishing their work with food chains and food webs. Students will begin to explore different types of energy. We will look at light energy, thermal energy, and electrical energy.
Our Writers are ready for STAAR! Please encourage your child to get plenty of rest the night before, think positively, and do their best work. Writers will take their Writing STAAR Test on Tuesday, April 9th. After STAAR, students are excited to move on from expository essays and into writing fiction stories.
In Reading, we just finished our benchmark. We celebrated and reflected on our strengths and areas for growth. We will review the different genres we covered this year and some of the skills that will be assessed on STAAR. We take our Reading STAAR Test on Tuesday, May 14th.
Please check out our website for weekly updates at https://sites.google.com/cfisd.net/gleason4news.
Fifth Grade
Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun in 5th! How is it that in just two short months we’ll be sending our babies off to MIDDLE SCHOOL?! It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming their precious faces in at Tiger Express. The month of April will be a busy one, but we are confident our kiddos are prepared and ready to tackle testing season. Students will take their STAAR Math on Tuesday, April 9th and STAAR Reading on Wednesday, April 10th. Following STAAR, our readers and writers will begin their research unit. In math, they will continue spiraling back over previous content to ensure mastery for 6th grade. In science, students will continue with their classroom curriculum by investigating uses of energy including mechanical, electrical, light and sound. They will take their energy unit test at the end of the month on April 25th. Science STAAR test will be on Wednesday, May 15th.
