Learn...to Achieve!

January 8th, 2021

Parents and guardians, please check below for updates on all things happening at Union Center Elementary!

NWEA Testing- Round 2 at UCE

The NWEA Testing window for Union Township Schools opens this Monday, January 11th and closes Friday, January 22nd.

At some point in the next two weeks, your child will be taking two different tests: One for MATH and one for ELA.

Virtual Learner Parents, your child will be taking the NWEA Test from home at the same time as the In-Person students, similar to what we did in the Fall.

Please click HERE for more information on NWEA Testing at UCE!

Dyslexia Screening at UCE

Starting the week of January 25th, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students at both Union Center and John Simatovich will be screened for dyslexia in accordance with Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 217.

The screening process is very minimal for the students and will be a very small part of their academic day.

Parents do have the option to 'Opt-Out' of this screening. For more information on the screening and/or to have your child opt-out of this screening, please click HERE.

Snow Make-Up Day on Monday, January 18th

Barring any last minute winter weather, all UTSC students will NOT have school on Monday, January 18th as a scheduled snow make-up day!

Proper Winter Attire at Recess

Just a friendly reminder that students must have the proper attire in order to go outside for recess: This can include snow pants, boots, gloves, hat, etc., depending on the age of the child.

Since students will still need to rotate areas while outside, it's imperative that students be prepared with the proper attire in order to stay warm and safe while outside :)

Returning Books to the Library

The UCE Library is still missing books from 2nd Quarter!

Please check with your child (and maybe their bedroom and backpack) to see if they have any holdover library books that need to be returned!

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Ramirez at kramirez@union.k12.in.us

Protocols and Guidelines

Just a reminder, the safety guidelines and protocols that have been in place at UCE since August will remain as we return to school in 2021! This means that students will still:

  • Wear facemasks throughout the day
  • Be seated in their pods while at lunch
  • Participate in recess with only the students in their classroom
  • Have assigned seats when riding the bus
  • Be required to hand sanitize and/or wash their hands throughout the day

We will continue to work diligently to keep UCE a safe and happy place for our students to learn!

Free Tutoring Opportunities (Recurring)

The Youth Services Coordinator for the Porter County Public Library is offering free online tutoring from 2:00-11:00 PM!

Principal Fuller's Thoughts

Happy New Year!

Ushering in a new year brings with it so many hopes and goals for the year to come.

It’s a fresh start…a clean slate.

After 2020, we all need that :)

I never was much into New Year’s Resolutions…until I met my wife.

She instilled in me how powerful those resolutions can be…if you create a roadmap to achieve them.

It’s nice in theory to tell yourself that you will lose 20 pounds throughout the year, but unless you create monthly, weekly, and even daily goals for that LARGER goal, it’s more likely that your goal will get lost in the shuffle of life by February.

I’ve talked before about having a purpose with your goals, and how goals can only be achieved if you have the proper process to get yourself to the finish line...resolutions are very much the same.

One of my (many) resolutions this year is to be more present in the moment.

We can get so wrapped up in what we are doing, that we don’t always enjoy the small moments in life that make us happy.

Whether answering emails, meeting deadlines, or cleaning around the house, find the joy in doing those little things!

Happy New Year, UCE!
