Welcome New Flynn Staff
Meet our New Assistant Principal-Mr. Herb Perez
Meet Our New Guidance Counselor-Mrs. Emily Russen
Hello! I am very excited to introduce myself as the school counselor at Flynn Elementary!
My passion for working within schools, specifically the elementary level, began in 2014 when I was a Paraeducator here at Flynn. I loved walking into the school every morning to the excited energy of the environment and watching the students grow (educationally, socially, and emotionally) over the course of the year! It was that experience that inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in School Counseling at the University of Vermont.
Following completion of my graduate degree, my husband’s (a Flynn alumni!) job relocated us (and our very energetic dog named Spartacus) to San Diego where we spent the next 3+ years. During that time, I helped launch and oversee an Intensive Outpatient Program for adolescents, focused on teaching skills surrounding emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.
While the sunshine in San Diego was beautiful, Burlington, VT has always had a very special place in my heart. There is a deep sense of community here that is unlike any other place I have been. I am thrilled beyond words to be back and to get to know you all!
Meet Our New Special Educator- Lauren Weiss
Hello Flynn community! My name is Lauren Weiss and this is my 10th year as an educator, my 6th year working in the Burlington School District, and my 1st year as a Special Education Teacher at J.J. Flynn. Currently, I work with grades 1 and 2.
I recently completed my Masters of Arts in Teaching with an endorsement in Special Education at Saint Michael’s College.
I am passionate about student-centered learning, fostering a sense of belonging, and promoting student agency.
Throughout my life I have enjoyed participating in many activities outside of school, including jewelry-making, playing the drums, hip hop dance, boxing, climbing, and various team sports. I love learning new things and am excited to share this enthusiasm with our community!
