New Senior Academy option
Have you heard of the ASVAB? It stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. We at Crosby Scholars believe strongly in the ASVAB’s value for clarifying strengths and interests that might direct you toward a major area in college or toward a specific career field. Although branches of the military use ASVAB results to determine training assignments, it is NOT a recruitment tool, and the information gathered from the assessment has value for students fully committed to post-secondary education.
Seniors, you can take the ASVAB during a school day at your high school and Crosby Scholars will award you one credit toward your Senior requirement of participating in two Academies. Please check with your school counselor to confirm the date(s) and time the ASVAB will be administered, along with when and how to register for the ASVAB.
To receive one Senior Academy credit from Crosby Scholars, you must submit a copy of your ASVAB results to our office prior to April 1, 2019. We will ask you what you have learned about yourself!
Please consider this option to meet one of the Crosby program requirements while gaining a better understanding of your intellectual aptitude as you are setting goals for further education.
College Fair Requirement
Not sure if you have met this requirement? Check your Crosby portal and click My Status to find out. If the portal displays "No" beside PSOS/College Fair, then you must attend a fair this year (even if you already know to which colleges you plan to apply).

College Application Week: NC Countdown to College
College Application Week will be held Oct. 15-19 this year. The week-long event features free application fees for certain colleges and university in North Carolina.
During NC Countdown to College week, counselors, senior advisors, mentors and parents will help seniors submit online college applications for admission through the CFNC application hub. Here is a list of the North Carolina colleges and universities that will waive their application fees this week.
Throughout October, CFNC will give extra help to students as they fill out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to determine eligibility for college aid, and use the Residency Determination Service to determine if they qualify for in-state tuition.
Students who want to take part in NC Countdown to College should make a profile on the CFNC website at www.cfnc.org. For more information, visit nccountdowntocollege.org.
FAFSA - Time to file!
The FAFSA opened on October 1st. Filing the FAFSA early will help you avoid missing financial aid deadlines, thereby maximizing the amount of aid for which you could be eligible. Don't wait until the day the application is due!
Steps for filing the FAFSA:
- Each student and one parent should apply for a FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov. Make sure to keep a record of the parent's and student's email addresses, the answers to the security questions, and both FSA IDs in a secure place. You'll need that information to sign the FAFSA.
- Complete the 2019-20 FAFSA available at fafsa.gov as soon after October 1 as possible as state grant funds do deplete.
- Check the FAFSA submission deadlines for each school to which you apply.
- You'll need information from your 2017 tax filing.
- After Submitting the FAFSA, you'll receive a Student Aid Report which is necessary to check the status of your FAFSA.
New - The FAFSA is going mobile! For more information, click here!
