Hastings Boys' High School
Newsletter 2023 February Volume 1
Message from the Headmaster
Kia Ora Koutou
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2023. An especially warm welcome to those students, their family and whānau new to our school. To the new Year 9's, you have begun an exciting journey towards becoming a man, not an ordinary man, but someone special.
At the heart of this are our Ākina Man values of Communication, Courage, Empathy, Diligence, Respect, Initiative and Integrity.
At Hastings Boys' High School we have been extremely fortunate to appoint an outstanding group of new staff: Mr J Hurae (Head of Art), Ms A McIsaac (English), Mr P Crawford (Māori Department), Mr C Crawford (Maths/PE), Mr J Shoemark (Director of Rugby), Mr Z Southwick (Building Academy), Mr C Wadley (Teacher Aide), Ms A McIntyre (Teacher Aide)
As I have mentioned on every platform, the greatest barrier to our young men achieving at school is poor attendance. Please support us to maintain attendance of over 90% for the year.
Well done to last years 11, 12 and 13 students who again have achieved very pleasing NCEA results well above the national mean. They are listed below and I will hopefully be able to publish our results in the next few weeks.
Construction is well underway on our new ten classroom English/Mathematics Facility. This will be a welcome addition to our teaching environment. We will keep you updated on the progress.

Our 2022 NCEA Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to Riley Bogard-Allen (Dux and Deputy Head Boy 2022) and Pritesh Sunder (Academic Captain 2022) on being awarded the following New Zealand Scholarships:
Geography - Riley Bogard-Allen and Pritesh Sunder
English - Riley Bogard-Allen
New Zealand Scholarship is demanding for the most able candidates in each subject at Year 13. Assessment is by either a written/spoken examination or by the submission of a portfolio or report of work produced throughout the year. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding, and ideas to complex situations. It is the highest award in secondary school attainment and is awarded to very few students throughout the country each year.
Congratulations Pritesh

Thank you to Napier RSA
A huge Thanks to Craig, John and Anne at the Napier RSA.
Here are some photos of Year 10 students using the computers we bought last year with the grant funding given to us by the RSA in Napier.
This is a game changer for us and will allow more students access to quality computers capable of running Fusion 360, the CAD programme we use in Technology.
Thank you, once again, for your generous support of our Technology workshops.
Congratulations to these students who passed NCEA 2022 with Merit or Excellence
