Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
December 14, 2018
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
At their meeting this week, the Board of Education accepted the 2017-2018 (FY 18) Annual Audit from Gerding Korte & Chitwood CPA’s. Again this year the Audit was unqualified or a ‘clean audit’ meaning there were no recommendations or specific items to correct. A complete Audit and Audit Communications letter is posted at https://tinyurl.com/yc3ehyzq for your review. As one might expect both documents contain significant information.
The Audit Communications letter is a basic document indicating there are no deficiencies considered to be material weaknesses and district prepared information was readily available when needed.
Viewing the actual Financial report can be a bit more daunting; however, the items below might be of interest.
Pages 4-10, the Management Discussion, provides the district financial overview of the audit year.
Page 14, is an overview of all funds, expenses, and revenue. Of note is the Operating Fund revenue exceeded expenditures by $15,037 and $1,838,336 was paid to retire debt.
Page 43, provides detail for all revenue sources in all funds.
Page 44, provided detail for all expenditure sources in all funds.
Audit Note 4 indicates outstanding debt of $8,597,425 yet the District upon patron approval has the capacity to borrow an additional $24,087,802.
Audit Note 13 documents that $106,617 is the amount of abated taxes that provide City of Fulton projects.
Your District staff works hard to ensure the integrity and accountability of all financial transactions. As previously indicated the Audit is available online or a copy may be viewed in the Central Office.
In other Board of Education action, the firm of Hollis & Miller was hired to conduct a comprehensive Facilities Plan which will include evaluation of existing facilities, projecting future space needs, and outline maintenance projects for future years. It is anticipated the facilities review will start in January and structured community input will commence in early spring. A final report is anticipated at the December 2019 Board of Education meeting. Development of the Facilities Plan is being guided by the District Strategic Plan which can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/yb6dbadr.
As I suspect you are aware, Winter Break begins at the normal school dismissal times Friday, December 21, 2018. Students are expected to return ready to learn Thursday, January 3, 2019.
I trust the holidays will be good for you and your family. Best wishes!
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
Superintendent
