FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE
When we were kids, I would suspect many of us did not relish having homework. We thought to ourselves, "When I grow up, I'll never have to do homework." Well...not exactly. As parents and guardians, we often find ourselves still doing homework - it's just that now we are the homework helpers with our kids at home. Sometimes, homework can be a stressful time. How many times have you heard, "That's not the way we did it in class today!" and felt like throwing your hands up and walking away? Walking away is precisely our topic for this week.
If a math assignment is taking longer than a half-hour to complete (or 10-15 minutes for those of you with children in our younger grades), just draw a line and write a note that you tried. Another minute spent on that assignment will be torture for your child and you. Learning occurs during productive struggle - when we are challenged to accomplish something just beyond our comfort zone, but we can accomplish it with focused effort. However, at the 10/15-30 minute mark of an elementary homework assignment, the struggle is unproductive. Frustration has set in and this could lead to an emotional response. Your child's teacher will understand completely and work with him or her to get a better grasp of the learning. This work will likely take longer than a day, but Norton Creek is deeply committed to the learning, growth, and development of each and every Eagle.
For our third, fourth, and fifth grade families, I have a special message for you: Your Eagle will be coming home with Winter Performance Series scores for you to review with them. If you have any questions about this data, please, feel free to reach out to me at (331) 228-6167.
As we head into this weekend, let's be sure to remember that the reason we do not have school Monday is to celebrate a truly great man, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Have a wonderful, long weekend, Norton Creek!
5-ESSENTIALS SURVEY
Middle School Transfer Requests
Families who wish to submit Middle School Transfer requests may do so beginning February 3. The request form will be available on the District 303 website through February 28. Families must complete a separate form for each student they want transferred. Requests are granted based on space available so siblings are not guaranteed placement. A written decision will be communicated to families before spring break.
Once the request is approved, a student may remain at that middle school throughout his or her middle school career, as long as the student resides in District 303.
Families of students granted permission to attend a school outside of their assigned attendance are responsible for their own transportation.
Students will return to their assigned attendance area high school regardless of the middle school attended.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION....
FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Parents/Guardians of Kindergarten & 2nd Grade Students,
Illinois State law requires that all children entering Kindergarten, and 2nd grade will have an oral health examination. A licensed dentist must perform the dental exam and he/she shall sign and date the report form. Students must present proof of a dental examination prior to May 1st of the school year. The Dental Examination form can be obtained on the D303.org website or by contacting your child’s school and requesting a dental exam form.
The rationale for these grades being identified as requiring the examination is that these are the ages at which sealants are applied to children’s teeth.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has established a waiver for children who show undue burden or lack of access to a dentist. Parents or legal guardians who object to the dental examinations on religious grounds shall present to the school a signed, detailed statement of the objection.
If you have any questions, please contact the Health Office.
Sincerely,
D303 Health Services

IMPORTANT COLD WEATHER & OUTSIDE RECESS INFORMATION
Per District policy, we will be going outside for recess as long as the temperature (with wind chill) is above 0 F and it is not raining. With that in mind, please make sure your child is dressed to go outside on days when it is cold, snowy or windy. Students should bring outerwear to school in a bag to put on before recess. Please make sure they have hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants and boots if they want to play in the snow. Don’t forget to label your child’s outerwear so it does not end up in the Lost and Found.
