Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindness Week! Today, students and staff arrived to find signs all over campus with positive messages. I'd like to publicly thank a family who wishes to remain anonymous for this simple but powerful way to kick off our activities. Our Random Acts of Kindness Club has worked hard to develop themes and activities throughout the week to reinforce the importance of kindness. You can see a full listing of each day's activities in the "Looking Ahead" section below.

The Rest of the Week & April Break

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9, students in grades 3 and 6 have their first sessions of MCAS testing. For a complete listing of scheduled MCAS tests, see below. Also, tomorrow PAC will hold their monthly meeting at 7:00 pm to discuss plans for teacher/ staff appreciation week, future fundraisers, end of the year activities and more.

On Wednesday, April 10, The Florence Sawyer School Council meets in the library at 3:30. Meetings are open to the public. Our middle school baseball team opens their season with a game at Tahanto Middle School at 3:30. The softball team will scrimmage the Luther Burbank Middle School team in Lancaster.

On Thursday, students in grade 5 have their rescheduled field trip to the Christa McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning.

On Friday, students in grades 5-8 may choose to voluntarily participate in, or support, the National Day of Silence, sponsored and led by the students of the FSS middle school Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). The National Day of Silence is a student-led event where students make a choice to be silent to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ people in schools. Students who choose to participate get a "participant" or "supporter" badge at the beginning of the school day. If they choose to "participate," they remain silent for part or all of the day. "Supporter" badges are for those individuals who support the cause but for any reason are unable to be silent.

During the April break, office hours will be from 8 to 2, Tuesday through Friday.

On Saturday the 20th of April, The Bolton Parks, and Recreation Department has asked me to remind everyone that, The Easter Bunny is coming to Bolton! Join Bolton Parks & Recreation for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 20th, 10 – 11:30 AM at the Emerson School Gym (50 Mechanics Street). The Egg Hunt will begin promptly at 11 AM so don’t be late! You could find the Golden Ticket and win a special prize. Enjoy refreshments and crafts and bring your camera to snap a picture with the Easter Bunny!

The FSS Spring Musical

Golly Gee Whiz concluded a very successful run this weekend with performances on Friday and Saturday night. The cast, crew and creative team delivered a highly entertaining show to rave reviews. Look for a slide show of images from this weekend's performances coming up in The Item.

Health Notes

Health Office Updates

Hand Sanitizer Wall Dispensers have been installed around the Sawyer and Emerson Wings for students, staff, and parents, including just outside both main offices, to help prevent the spread of germs. As always, hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of germs, so we ask you to please remind your children to do this as often as they can throughout their day.

The FSS Health Offices work hard to provide high-quality service for all students. Please find the following forms and informational links.

SEPAC in May Due to demand, SEPAC has announced a change of Venue for their May 21 workshop, "Stressed Out Students. This workshop will be held on May 21 at the Center School in Stow and will be recorded by Stow TV. This workshop is open to all parents. See below for more details.

Stressed Out Students, Understanding the Impact of Anxiety on Motivation and Learning

Tuesday, May 21st, 7pm

403 Great Road

Stow, MA

Today’s children and teens are experiencing more stress and anxiety than ever before, which is concerning due to the detrimental impact that anxiety can have on academic, social, and daily life. In this workshop, we will address:

♦ What is the difference between stress and anxiety, and what does anxiety look like?

♦ How does anxiety function and connect with attention and executive function?

♦ How does anxiety impact motivation?

♦ What are some general strategies for supporting these needs in students?

There will be some time for specific questions from the audience. Dr. Angela Currie is a pediatric neuropsychologist at NESCA in Londonderry, NH and Newton, MA, where she conducts neuropsychological and psychological evaluations. She enjoys working with stressed-out children and teens, working to tease apart the various factors that may be lending to their stress, such as underlying learning, attentional, or emotional challenges. Dr. Currie particularly enjoys working with the seemingly “unmotivated” child, as well as children who have “flown under the radar” for years due to their desire to succeed. This event will be broadcast by Stow TV. A recording will be available following the presentation. Sponsored by Nashoba SEPAC

Behavior: The Language of Learning

Thursday, April 25th, 6:30-8pm

100 Mechanic Street

Bolton, MA

Children communicate through their behavior. Behavioral problems may occur when we misunderstand what a child is trying to tell us. Adults often find themselves addressing the same behaviors and wondering why a child repeats these behaviors. This workshop will help get under the behavior and discover what it is a child is trying to tell you. Donna will provide simple, yet effective tools for managing behavior issues.

Donna Shea, Founder of the Peter Pan Center for Social and Emotional Growth, is a pioneer in social coaching, a non-clinical approach to social-emotional learning. Shea’s award-winning programs have been helping children achieve social success for over sixteen years. In addition to holding certifications in bullying prevention, Foundations of Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Coaching, she is an author of the How to Make & Keep Friends book series on Amazon.
