SEL/PBIS

Hi Titan families!

As we march into the new school year, we are working to ensure that each and every child can develop socially, emotionally, and academically. Our shared vision for SEL this year is:

Benefield Elementary School will empower learners to become confident risk takers striving for their personal best.

At Benefield, all stakeholders will develop and maintain inclusive community connections, and work together cohesively and equitably to grow to reach their full potential.

In connection with PBIS, we will focus on The Character Trait of Kindness during our first month. We will connect this throughout our school to empathy and social awareness and relationship skills. At Benefield, we care about our community, classmates, and classrooms. Teachers will be recognizing and rewarding students who obey the school rules, show respect to students, respect school property, and who are helping to keep our school beautiful. Please discuss with your child the importance of making responsible decisions to create a unified community and practicing Kindness at Benefield.

Counselor's Corner

This month, we will be implementing our Attendance Incentive plan! Classes with perfect attendance will be given the opportunity to earn rewards from the counselors. Incentives include Snowie Shaved Ice, Dunkin Donuts, Popcorn, and more! Please ensure your student is attending school each day. Letters to the parents of students who have 5, 7, and 10 unexcused absences are being mailed. It’s imperative that students are at school on time each and every day as students may be considered truant under Georgia Law (O.C.G.A. Section 20-2-690.1)1 after 10 unexcused absences. Please check your student’s Friday folder for information explaining the attendance policy for each grade level.

We are planning to conduct parent workshops in the upcoming weeks to better support the needs of families. Please let us know the topics you would be most interested in by taking this survey!

Thank you for supporting to ensure each and every student is READY on a daily basis.

Media Center Minutes

Did you know that every GCPS student automatically has an account with the Gwinnett County Public Library? Students use their student number (the same number as their computer login) as their account number. If accessing materials online, the password is the student’s birthdate with two digits for the month and two digits for the day (MMDD). Stop by the Gwinnett County Public Library today and take advantage of all they have to offer!

The Family Center - International Night News You Can Use

International Night Cultural Touch Tables and Trifold Displays

International Night is approaching and the Family Center invites you to participate in creating a hall display of your country of choice. To ensure that we meet the needs of all families, we ask that all trifold include touch displays. Suggested items for touch displays include maps, flags, clothing, pictures, jewelry, toys, dolls, games, posters, textiles, or wooden objects.

We ask that all displays are kid friendly and interactive if possible. For example, families can create the country's flag or draw a replica of the wooden artifacts and explain why the artifact is important.

International Night Cuisine

Would you like to share a cuisine or sweet treat? If so, we would love for you to drop off your item(s) in the cafe on September 28, starting at 5:30 pm.

Building Babies Brains

Did you know that 54% of our Gwinnett children are not ready for Kindergarten according to the GCPS Kindergarten Readiness Entry Profile? Awareness of the importance of early learning starting at birth and having access to the tips and tools we need to teach our children is key to changing this number!

Children are born ready to learn, and have many skills to learn over many years. They depend on parents, family members, and other caregivers as their first teachers to develop the right skills to become independent and lead healthy and successful lives. How the brain grows is strongly affected by the child’s experiences with other people and the world. Nurturing care for the mind is critical for brain growth. Children grow and learn best in a safe environment where they are protected from neglect and from extreme or chronic stress with plenty of opportunities to play and explore.

Would you like to bring learning to the living room?

As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. The AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families of children in grades K-5 so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that suits them and their schedule best. You can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information at a time that best fits their schedule, and gain tips and suggestions on how to best help their children through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics.

Family Engagement Tips

Daydreaming can be a productive use of time

Daydreaming can be a productive use of time It may sound surprising, but daydreaming can be a useful activity as kids start thinking in more abstract terms. Daydreaming helps children reduce stress. It allows them to be creative, develop empathy and spend time on self-reflection. Give your child some free time and a place to daydream undisturbed. Build a little downtime into family activities, too. After a ball game, relax on a hill. Watch the clouds.

Families play a part in safety at school

You want your child to behave and be safe at school. One way to help is to talk together about behavior and safety issues. Review the school rules and discipline policies, and make it clear that you expect your child to follow them. Role-play ways to behave in different situations so your child is comfortable and knows what to do. Meeting your child's friends and their families is another good way to ensure that your student spends time in safe, well-supervised settings.
