Need to Know News Shared with OES Parents

OES Health Fair – According to the most recent childhood obesity rates within Spartanburg County, approximately 38% of all 5th grade students are obese. As studies support, the practices and lifestyles of children typically follow them into adulthood.

At Oakland, we embrace a culture that supports and reinforces the health and well-being of each student at the earliest age. Furthermore, we seek to collaborate with parents and the local community to promote health. Therefore, in an effort to advocate and promote wellness throughout the entire OES community, we are hosting our first OES Health Fair! With over 30 vendors, door prizes, and entertainment, this is an event you do not want to miss! The evening will begin at 6:30pm with an “All Star” performance from our school’s P.E. Club. Then, immediately following, we invite everyone to check out the health fair from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Also, since we’re asking our families to give a night to be with us, we’ll provide one homework pass to every student (who attends)! And while you’re here be sure to check out our “Groovy” Spring Book Fair…

Spring Book Fair – The book fair will be held Monday, March 21st through Friday, March 25th. The book fair will also be open from 6:00-6:30pm on Tuesday evening (as well as a brief time following the PTA meeting. We also invite students to participate in Groovy Day by dressing up in appropriate “hippie” attire on Thursday, March 24th! Tie-dyed peace sign necklaces will be sold for $1.00 during the Book Fair, with all proceeds going to Relay for Life.

OES Single-Gender Program – If your child is a current 2nd or 3rd grader, he or she will have the option of participating in our school’s single-gender program next year. Participation in the program requires parents to opt-in. As a reminder, participation in our school’s single-gender program is subject to availability and students will be chosen as a result of a lottery. To learn more about this unique opportunity, you are invited to attend the upcoming information session on Thursday, March 31st at 5:30pm.

2016 Annual Report Card Survey (Parents of 4th grade students only) – The 2016 Annual State Department of Education Report Card Surveys will go home to parents this week. Parents, please remember to return your surveys to us by Wednesday, March 30th. These surveys will provide the administration and our School Improvement Council (SIC) the feedback needed to make future decisions regarding our students’ academic and social experience at Oakland.

Relay for Life Easter Eggs – The OES Relay for Life team will continue to sell Easter Eggs for $1.00. Every Easter Egg is filled with goodies and surprises. All eggs we delivered this Thursday or Friday. If interested, return the form by Thursday!
