Principal's Column

Dear South School Families:

It is amazing to believe that we are finishing our second quarter of the school year. It's good to see our students already back in the swing of school so quickly after the holiday break.

Spelling Bee

The District 25 Spelling Bee took place last week. Congratulations to all our participants: Nishchal A., Mahek G., Lauren J., Colin R., Kanya R.,and Alena T. Kanya R., who emerged as the winner, and will be representing South Middle School and District 25 at the regional level Spelling Bee. Join us as we wish her good luck!

Winter MAP Scores

The Winter NWEA MAP reports will be sent home with students on January 24th for all 6th- and 7th-grade students, and 8th-grade students who have been progress-monitored.

5 Essentials Survey

South students and staff will be participating in the state-required 5E survey, which identifies five indicators that lead to improved outcomes for all students, including an increase in attendance, as well as gains in state test scores. These five indicators that positively affect school success are:

  1. Effective Leaders
  2. Collaborative Teachers
  3. Involved Families
  4. Supportive Environments
  5. Ambitious Instruction

The survey will be taken during the week of January 27th.

AfterSchool Sports

Students trying out for spring sports must have a current physical on file (within the last year) in order to even tryout. Please make arrangements with your child's physician.

Ski Club Trips

Prior to winter break, South's ski club enjoyed an evening of skiing. The trip was well attended and students had a great time. Please join them on their next trips on January 31, 2020, to Wilmont Mountain and February 22, 2020, to Alpine Valley.

Science Olympiad

The South Science Olympiad Team is in the midst of another competition season. There are two teams, a Varsity Team of 15 seventh- and eighth-grade students, and a Junior Varsity Team of up to 25 sixth- and seventh-grade students. Each team competes in 23 different events.

Each event has a coach and two team members. Coaches are teachers, parents, and community volunteers. Each team member competes on between 3-5 events. This year we have competed in two invitationals, and still have two more invitationals on our calendar (University of Chicago, January 18, 2020, and Kildeer, February 8, 2020).

Unfortunately, the weather excluded us from attending the British International School Invitational this year. However, the students and their coaches will receive copies of the tests given at the invite to use in their practices. After the invitational season is over, we compete at the regional (NVHS February 29, 2020). This will be the last competition for the JV team. If all goes as planned, the Varsity team will move forward to the state competition in April. We are very proud of this hard-working group of students and coaches.

Stay warm,

Dr. Jim Morrison, Principal

South Middle School

7th Grade Lorado Taft trip

There will be a parent information meeting for South's upcoming Lorado Taft trip. The meeting is held Wed., February 5, 2020 at 6pm. We will be providing a comprehensive overview of all aspects of the Lorado Taft Outdoor Education experience.

This year students on Team 7 East will experience Lorado Taft on April 20-22, 2020, and students on Team 7 West will experience Lorado Taft on April 22-24, 2020. The meeting is intended for parents only and will be held in the Multi-Purpose room at South.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, a comprehensive information packet and permission slips will be provided to your child during the week to bring home to you.

Frostbite Volleyball Invite

Our South Girls Volleyball Teams will be participating in the Holmes Jr High Frostbite Volleyball Tournament, on January 24 & 25, 2020. The doors open at 7:30am and games begin at 8am. Holmes Jr High is located at 1900 Lonnquist Blvd., Mt. Prospect IL 60056. Come watch our girls play and cheer them on.

South Wrestling Team

Our South wrestling team had their first home meet on January 8, 2020, against Sundling. This is the first year for South to have our own wrestling team, as last year our students were combined with Thomas Middle School. The team and coaches were very excited to host their first meet. Thanks to everyone who attended! Go Cardinals!

Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences - February 13th & 14th

District 25 has set aside February 13-14, 2020, as our spring parent/teacher conference days. The format for spring conferences is different from fall, we will only be conducting team-invited conferences.

With this format, we are unable to invite all families to meet with their child's team. If your child’s team is recommending a conference, it does not necessarily mean there is a concern. Mainly, it signifies that the team feels this is a good time to check in with you and your child.

For team invited conferences, team leaders will be contacting parents to schedule a time for the conference. All teams would like students to be present for the conference.

Graduation Pictures

On February 11, 2020, 8th-grade students will be having their 8th-grade graduation pictures taken. Boys should wear a shirt and tie. Sport coat, suit, or sweater is optional. Girls should avoid hair updos. Students should refrain from wearing turtleneck sweaters or any type of high-neck top. Students will be photographed against a green screen, please avoid wearing shades of green.

No payment is needed at this time. Proofs will be sent home for parent approval. There will be a $10 charge for picture retakes for any reason other than photographic errors. Retakes are scheduled for Wed., March 11, 2020.
