Summary of Research
Texting and driving is very dangerous. The Official U.S. Government Website for Distracted Drivers states, “More than nine people are killed every day. And at least 1153 people are injured every day. About 660,000 people use their phones while driving.” Some people think they can look down for just a second, and an accident is caused just like that. I have heard many stories of people killing or hurting people, just by using their phones while driving, yet people still have not learned their lesson. The Official U.S. Government Website for Distracted Drivers also states, “In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,360 in 2011. An additional, 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2012, a 9% increase from the 387,000 people injured in 2011. In 2011, nearly one in five crashes (17%) in which someone was injured. In December 2012, more than 171 billion text messages were sent or received in the US.” Which means that there was a lot of people that had been injured and killed during those years. And I noticed that it said “caused by a distracted driver.” This stuff happened 2 to 3 years ago. Think about this very day. Population has increased and i’m sure so has the risk of injuring or killing a person by a distracted person. Wiki states, “There has been many studies that have linked texting while driving to be the cause of life-threatening accidents due to driver distraction.” Some of these accidents, that were caused by distracted driver and very serious. The people that have been injured could be injured severely. This stuff is very hard to deal with. I remember a couple of years ago my second cousin and her husband were taking a walk down the sidewalks and one lady was texting on her phone while driving. She went out of control and hit them and killed her husband. My cousin was injured badly and had to get about a thousand stitches on her head. So some solutions that could help prevent texting and driving could be like police should be more aware of people texting on the roads. Make the texting law more important and aware.
