Chronic Absenteeism
Missing 18 or more days (10%) over the course of an entire school year regardless of the reason.
Please ensure that your child attends school every day and logs in on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:
- Make sure your child keeps a regular bedtime and establishes a morning routine.
- Ensure your child logs in every day unless they are truly sick. If your child must be absent from school, please have him/her complete any missed assignments in a timely manner.
- Email or go to the help desk promptly to address issues with technology. https://www.rvaschools.net/technolog or contact our school secretary, Ms. Julie Lawson.
- Develop back up plans for getting your child logged in for school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to help get your child logged into school daily. One benefit of virtual learning is that students can attend school anywhere!
- If childcare is an issue, consider applying for one of the emergency childcare centers, which still have lots of open seats. Please reach out to our school counselor for more information, Marsha Williford (mwillifo@rvaschools.net).

The Trumpet of the Swan! (Virginia Reads One Book)
Our school is taking part in a unique statewide all-school book club called Virginia Reads One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book—The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. You will be asked to read it together at home for about 15 minutes each night, over the next three weeks.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader while being a fun, worthwhile family activity. We have selected a title that can be enjoyed by younger students while still being interesting for older children so our whole school can participate together.
Included below are a reading schedule, tips for reading aloud, and book-related activities to do at home.
So, let’s all get to know that funny little trumpeter swan, Louis. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at Westover Hills Elementary School.

Surveys on 2021-2022 Calendar
2021-22 Calendar Proposal – Turning to next year's calendar, I want to remind everyone to complete our feedback surveys. Here's the parent/caregiver survey and the teacher/staff survey. Some of the key features of the proposed calendar:
- A fully in-person opening, along with a virtual pathway for families who prefer that option
- 7 weeks of extra instruction to support our 5,000 highest-need students: 3 weeks in July/August right before school (“Jump Start”), 2 weeks in November (“Fall Boost”), and 2 weeks in March (“Spring Boost”)
- More than $10,000 in additional compensation for teachers who choose to work the additional weeks (those weeks would be time off for teachers who choose not to work them)
- A 5-week summer for students participating in the extra days of instruction, and an 8-week summer for all other students
- 4 full-day and 2 half-day Teacher Work Days
- Days off for Easter Monday, Eid al-Fitr, Diwali, and Yom Kippur
