WBMS Friday Notes
March 11-15
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
There was a lot of focus on health today at WBMS! Evidence shows strong correlations between good health and academic achievement as well as social and emotional wellbeing; therefore, we emphasize wellness whenever we can. Although we had some drizzle this morning, many of our students and staff participated in our Walk to School Day and started their day with some exercise. On the nutrition front, some of our 6th graders were part of the county cafeteria taste test today where they learned about food and offered feedback on new recipes. Additionally, this year our health classes added two programs focused on relevant health issues our students face. Every child at WBMS engages in “CATCH My Breath,” an anti-vaping curriculum that serves to educate them about the immediate and long-term dangers of electronic cigarettes. Also, we have partnered with LRJ Foundation, whose motto is “Better Than Yesterday.” This organization comes to WBMS once every 9 weeks and speaks to our students about the significance of healthy relationships and how their relationships with others have a bearing on their wellness. They were on campus today, and we celebrated this meaningful partnership by wearing yellow. We are committed to doing what we can to support the whole child. Enjoy your family time this weekend!

Webb Bridge attends TomeCon
The Reading Club, this year joined Jr. Tome Society - grades 6-8. As part of the Jr. Tome Society we participated in 3 online competitions during this year that covered the current IT list books. These books provide students with a list of recently published, well-written, engaging novels they and the adults in their lives can trust to be awesome reads without worrying about excessive profanity and blush-worthy scenes. Each year in the spring The Tome Society hosts TomeCon which is an exciting day of concurrent sessions based on all facets of literacy for students in grades 3-12.
This year we had 3 members attend the event. Session topics include reading, writing, technology, engineering, art, music, and more! Authors from across the country visit with and teach students at the conference.
Congrats to the Alpharetta Cadets
Winter guard is a competitive form of indoor color guard. Alpharetta High School has a nationally ranked winter guard team. The Alpharetta feeder winter guard is called the Alpharetta Cadets which is made up of students from Webb Bridge Middle School and Hopewell Middle School. The Alpharetta Cadet winter guard performed in their third competition of the season at Kell High School this past Saturday. The team competed against students from middle schools throughout the metro Atlanta area. Our team had an amazing performance and placed 1st in their class!! The group has two more competitions, one at Mill Creek High School and their final one at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga which is the season championships. All of the Alpharetta winter guard teams will do a free performance at AHS for family and friends on Wednesday, March 27 at 5:30pm.

What is Relay?
What is Relay for Life?” It is a team fundraising cancer walk event that supports the American Cancer Society. It started in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours to raise money to help the organization. Today it is a day filled reflecting on those whose lives have been touched by cancer, as well as a day of hope. It unites family and friends and lends support to many others. And yes, it is a day of fun!
According to the American Cancer Society’s website, more than $4.8 billion have been invested in cancer research since 1946, all to find more and better treatments, uncover factors that may cause cancer, and improve cancer patients' quality of life.
This year the North Fulton Relay for Life will be held at the WBMS track on Saturday, May 11th. To help us make an impact, you can join our team, “Webb Way for a Cure 2019,” make a donation, or dedicate a luminaria for $10 in Support of, in Honor of, or in Memory of a friend or family member touched by cancer. Please also post our link

FBLA
FBLA held its general meeting on Friday, March 8. As part of the agenda students who participated in the State Leadership Conference were recognized as well as those students placing in the top five of their respective online testing categories. In addition, Kaushal Gokare of the Alpharetta High School FBLA chapter joined our students in discussion of ways to promote our spring community service drive, Relay for Life Luminaria dedications. For $10, a luminaria may be dedicated In Honor, In Memory, or In Support of a friend or loved one affected by cancer. During the meeting several members chose to speak of loved ones who lost their battle with cancer as the membership prepared signs for the luminaria sale. Webb Bridge Middle School will again be hosting this year’s North Fulton Relay for Life event on Saturday, May 11, and our FBLA members, in partnership with the AHS FBLA membership, will seek to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. We ask the Webb Bridge community to please support our efforts by dedicating a luminaria or donating to our school’s Relay team “Webb Way for a Cure” at https://tinyurl.com/WebbWayForACure2019.
