Location
Grasslands are located in every convenient,except for Antarctica. The different places you go the different grasslands you will see.The main plant in this biome is grass. This biome is good for farming because the soil is rich in nutrients. These grasslands are also known as prairies. The main grasslands in North America are the Great Plains of the Mid West.
Characteristics
The grasslands are made up basically of tiny little rolling hills. Short grass grasslands are mostly grass because it is to dry and hot and the grass is to thin for other plants to grow, but in tall grass grassland it is wet and very humid and the grass can get up to 11 feet tall! The general temperatures for grasslands are in January it gets down to 20° F, and 70° F in July. Regular rainfall is 10-30 inches.
Weather and climate
There are many different grasslands from tropical grasslands to dry grasslands. West of the Mississippi River the climate gets very wet and humid that is where tall grasslands are located,the ferther u go west the dryer it gets because a wall of mountains are blocking the pacific oceans moisture this is where short grass grasslands are located.
Temperature and Rainfall
The temperature in January gets down to 20° F, and 70° F in July. Regular rainfall is 10-30 inches a year depending on if your in short or tall grasslands.
Landforms
Grasslands are basically rolling hills, there are little trees depending on which type of grassland your in. There are also flat plains. Grasslands have very rich soil in nutrients,this is the main biome for farming.
Animals and Plants
All animals that live in grasslands are similar throughout the world,most are plant eating animals.Most animals in North America are bison, antelope, birds, gophers, prairie dogs, coyotes, and insects. The main plant in grasslands is grass ocationally there are trees depending on if the climate is wet enough.there are many different types of grass that grow in grasslands. There are five main grasses, purple needlegrass, wild oats, foxtail, ryegrass, and buffalo grass. Wild flowers also grow in grasslands here are some that u would find, asters, blazing stars, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, and wild indigos.
Bison
A bison is a plant eating animal and is the largest terrestrial animal in North America and Europe
Deer and antelope
Deer and antalope are still found near places like Wyoming but the hearts are getting smaller.
Bees
This is a bee pollinating on a milk weed flower
Sweet Coneflower
The coneflower can grow up to 6 feet tall if planted in rich,moist soil
Prairie blazingstar
It is a magenta colored flower and can grow up to 5 feet high. Many kinds of butterflies are attracted to this flower.
The stinging needle plant
This plant causes a painful sting when it touches your Skin,It grows up to 3 feet tall. This is how the plant protects itself from animals,insects,and people.
Catastrophic Events and Human Impact
one quarter of the land on earth is grasslands. a few spots of wild prairie remain. Because the soil is so rich in nutrients, nearly all of the wild grasslands have been turned into commercial farms.
