What's Happening? Counseling Lessons
1st: We are going to start lessons from Second Step - a program that focuses on social-emotional learning and has tons of resources. They also provide "Home Links" to help school and home be more connected. This week, we are practicing listening to learn and you can find the home link here.
2nd: We are continuing to practice identifying emotions and learning how our brain controls our emotions. Students will learn how their feelings change and how they can take charge to get themselves back to "safe waters". This week, we are focusing on finding calm. Students will practice finding their calm by first noticing how their body physically feels. This learning aligns with the zones of regulation curriculum.
3rd: We're continuing to learn about what's happening in our brain when we feel stressed or upset and how we can calm ourselves down and make smart choices. We will also learn how to "Ride the Wave" when we are not in the green zone and use different coping skills.
4th: In fourth grade, students are learning how to plan ahead for big feelings. We are learning to "chart a new path" by first identifying what puts us into our yellow/red zone. When students know the things that "bump" them into a different zone, they can try and avoid those situations or plan for what they will do if something angers, frustrates, worries them.
5th: This week, most of our classes will be learning about problem solving. We'll be learning about and practicing a six step model: 1) Cool off, 2) Share, Listen, Check, 3) Take Responsibility, 4) Brainstorm Solutions, 5) Choose a Solution, and 6) Affirm, Forgive, or Thank.

POSITIVITY PROJECT (P2)
September 21-25, 2020
P2 TRAIT: CURIOSITY
Your student has been learning about the CURIOSITY P2 trait all week. To help them continue this lesson and practice in daily life, you can use the P2 Book List or P2 for Families resource (password is "P2"). (Links below).
We also encourage you to have all of your family members take the character strength survey. This can be a great way to learn more about P2 and connect with LME!
