LCP junior Jordan Simmons featured in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal
This article originally appeared in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
What was originally leftover sidewalk chalk during the COVID-19 pandemic grew into something bigger for a Lubbock teen.
A 16-year-old junior in high school, Jordan Simmons is a self-taught artist who has created a name for himself in West Texas with his artwork created largely on sidewalks and driveways and shared on social media.
He began drawing in a sketchbook, but with his mom forced to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, he needed to find a way to keep himself and his sister busy.
So he explored beyond the sketchbook, taking to his back porch with some leftover sidewalk chalk.
Many Lubbockites and others around the country took to making pretty pictures on sidewalks during the early weeks of the COVID-19 quarantines - but Simmons took it to another level.
“When I started doing chalk art, something just clicked in a way and I really enjoyed it,” Simmons said.
Starting in April 2020, he shared images of one of his first creations - the characters from the Scooby-Doo cartoon - on his Jordan's Chalk Art Facebook page, and it took off. His first picture was popular on Facebook, as were subsequent images he shared, and he quickly gained a following.
That exposure opened doors to other opportunities for the young man, with fans offering to pay him for his work, and a year later he was able to save up and buy his first car.
He’s done multiple pieces in Lubbock and the surrounding area, including one at the First Friday Art Trail in May.
Although he enjoys creating the artwork, the reaction he gets from people for his work is his greatest motivation to keep going.
“Just knowing someone as small as me in the world can make a big difference to other people,” Simmons said.
Simmons' mother, Natossiah Hudspeth, said he’s met a lot of people who believe in him and receives an abundance of positive feedback.
“It makes my heart happy,” she said.
His work has expanded beyond simple sidewalk chalk. He'll paint on curbs, canvas, create custom chalk art, make wall murals, or window art. His prices depend on the cost of materials, the time it takes, and the size of the piece.
During the pandemic, people would donate chalk to Simmons, who can go through a large pack in about two to three days.
With this continued support for his work and growing business, Simmons has been able to provide for himself.
“He said ‘Mom, just to think that all this art really pays off’,” Hudspeth said.
Simmons’ favorite part is how everyone wants something different.
“It’s an opportunity to do something new each time,” he said.
Typically booked up a week in advance, Simmons’ said on average a piece will take him about an hour or two.
Although chalk art can last up to a week under normal weather conditions, he can apply hairspray to make the chalk stick for up to two weeks.
As his journey continues, he wants to learn the new skill of sculpting.
“As a kid we would play superheroes and action figures, so I feel like sculpting, in a way, is kind of like making your own,” Simmons said.
