A Message from the Principal
February was another fantastic month at Garfield. Since our first newsletter back in September, I feel as though each month things just keep getting better! I have had awesome opportunities to form relationships with our students. I think I have established a good level of trust with the kids as well. I think the juggling may have helped! I can honestly say I am loving being a Garfield Eagle! I will continue to work on getting to know all the families. I tend to be out in the classes more than in my office, but please be sure to stop me when you see me to say hi!
So many great things happened this month as you will see in the remainder of the newsletter. If you haven't signed up for Class Dojo, I would encourage you to get connected. It is a great way to stay connected to your child while you're at home or at work. Teachers often post pictures of the cool things the kids are working on, or important reminders. Some teachers post homework assignments. Teachers use Dojo as a way to acknowledge students for meeting expectations and redirecting students when they are not. Parents can receive notifications of these acknowledgements and disruptions. If you want to feel more connected, contact your child's teacher to learn how to gain access to the class.
As I wrap up my part of the newsletter, I bring good news. The next time I sit down to write this....IT WILL BE SPRING!!
Best Regards,
Cassandra Schultz

Perseverance - The Character Word for the Month of February - Leslie Nemmers
During the month of February the character word at Garfield School is Perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to stick to something and complete the task. You make a commitment to something or someone even though you may experience difficulties. For example, in the story of the tortoise and the hare, the tortoise, although slower than the hare, won the race by his perseverance. He kept trying despite his disadvantages.
In school, a child can practice perseverance by being a good student and completing homework assignments. To do this, parents need to acknowledge the importance and value of homework. When children begin homework assignments, encourage them to stick to it and keep at it, until it is done.
At home, children can practice perseverance by finishing chores or completing special requests from parents. Sometimes a task may look too difficult to complete. Simply, get started, like the tortoise, and put one foot in front of the other. Or, take one small part of the task and move on, soon the job will be done.
Remember, when you practice perseverance, doubts might enter your mind. Try to stay positive, and not give up. Showing commitment , pride and a positive attitude, may not be easy. So, keep trying again and again and again.

Celebration of Literacy and Summer Learning Registration Online Support
This event included many motivated families coming into Garfield wanting to share in the decorating of their child's writing portfolio, listen to students share stories written in class, and share the contents of their classroom book baskets. Students had an afterschool snack, signed-up for a raffle prize, and got a book to keep at home. Parents had the opportunity to sign-up their child for Summer Learning. Thank you to all who made the event a success!

High School students Bailey Whisler and Hannah Behrendt came in to volunteer in the classroom. They are reading with Hussein & Tegan.
The Spirit Stick
Each Wacky Wednesday, Ms. Schultz will go into each classroom to tally the number of students and teachers that participated. A running total for each week will be kept to determine which class had the highest percent of perception for the month. During our monthly character trait assembly, we will present the winning class with the SPIRIT STICK. That class will display it in their room until the next month's assembly when we will review the participation rates again and award the newest winner.
Thank you to Bailey Whisler and Hannah Behrendt for making the Spirit Stick.

Library news--Mrs. Dombrowski
As apart of our library time, we have started to do STEAM activities. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, work hard at problem solving and embrace team work through the creative process.
Here are a few examples of projects the students have done.
They had to build a pyramid six levels high out of sugar cubes and fit on a paper plate.
Build a structure with two sugar cubes as the base, jumbo craft sticks and small 3 oz. plastic cups.Garfield Elementary
