Library Learning

Kindergarten Students started the year learning about behavior in the library, how to care for library books, and learning The Parts of a Book song. They have also been in the computer lab learning about parts of a computer and how to use the mouse. Kindergartners currently can check out two books per week.


First Grade Students began the year reviewing library expectations, discussing book care, and going over behavior in the computer lab. Students learned the I Pick song to help choose just right books. First Graders can check out 7 books - 4 stay in the classroom and 3 go home.


Second Grade Students also started the year reviewing library and computer lab expectations and discussing care of library books. Students also learned the I Pick song to aid in choosing books that are just right for them to read. Second graders can check out 7 books - 5 go home and 2 stay in the classroom.


Third and Fourth Grade Students began the year discussing library procedures, sections of the library, and computer lab etiquette. Students are learning about the 2015-16 Iowa Children's Choice books. Students logged into their new district computer accounts for the first time. Third and fourth graders can check out 5 - 7 books.


Fifth and Sixth Grade Students reviewed library behavior and how to care for the books on the fiction shelves. Students learned the expectations for using technology at Shimek. Students logged into their new Google Drive accounts and their Google Classroom, a site where students can access library assignments, instructional videos, and turn in their digital work. Iowa Children's Choice Books for this year were also introduced. Fifth and sixth graders can check out 5 - 7 books.

Checkout Schedule

Students are welcome to check out and return books any day of the week, but each class has a scheduled checkout time once a week. Please help your child remember to return their books each week so they can select new ones!

Visiting Author

Grace Lin has had over a dozen books published, including Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, a 2010 Newbery Honor book. She will be visiting with the 3rd and 4th graders in Iowa City Schools in November. We will be preparing for her visit during the month of October. Grace Lin will be here the first week of November. Autographed books written by Grace Lin will be available for sale in the near future. Watch for details!
