MLK Jr. Weekend Edition
Principal's Newsletter 1/14/22
Greetings,
What a week. With the group efforts of the Schroeder community, we are able to still move forward. Thank you all. I know it continues to not be easy. However, seeing your student(s) here everyday (days they can make it) is all the motivation I need to stay the course.
With the end of the 2nd quarter 2 weeks away, and many possible absences, please know students may feel anxious or overwhelmed. If this is the case, please have them stop in to see:
- one of our school counselors, social workers, or school psychologists, or
- a teacher, or
- their assistant principal, or me!
Contact information is below in this letter.
Last night we held our Incoming Warrior Parent Course Information Night. It was very well attended by the Class of 2026! If you would like to see the course offerings as well, the course offerings are housed on the district website or HERE.
Have a warm weekend,
Paul

COVID Nurse's Office Information
Here is some information to assist you as we move forward on COVID-19.
As we have all seen in the news, COVID-19 case numbers have grown exponentially in the past week, just as the CDC released updated guidelines for isolation and quarantine. Many of our students and families have tested positive or have been exposed over break. Our school health office is fielding an extraordinary number of emails and calls from parents who have questions regarding these recent changes and want to know when their children may return to school. As per the email sent to our families by Brian Neenan on Friday, December 31, 2021, New York State has not adopted all changes as recommended by the CDC. In fact, the requirements for quarantine and isolation have not changed for students.
If your child tested positive for COVID-19, they may NOT attend school until the 10 day isolation is complete. Isolation is calculated adding 10 days to the date of symptom onset (or positive test date if they had no symptoms). Once a student tests positive, isolation REMAINS 10 days.
If your child has been exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19, quarantine remains 10 days. Students may not test out of quarantine. Day one of quarantine is the first day after the last day of unmasked exposure to the positive individual.
If your child is fully vaccinated (at least 14 days past the second shot) on the last date of exposure, then your child may attend school as long as they remain without symptoms. If your child develops symptoms during this 10 day quarantine, your child needs to isolate at home and seek a medical evaluation and PCR testing.
If your child is NOT vaccinated and has a known exposure to someone who tested positive, they may not attend school until the 10 day quarantine period is complete. If your child develops symptoms during this 10 day quarantine, your child needs to isolate at home and seek a medical evaluation and PCR testing.
NYS has changed Test to Stay guidelines. Students may only participate in Test to Stay if they were exposed at school. Students who have household or social exposure do not qualify for the Test to Stay program. Your school nurse will reach out to you if your child meets these new requirements.
Negative home test results are not permissible for return to school after illness. In order to return to school, a negative test must be performed by a healthcare provider office or a laboratory.
Students who develop new, unusual or worsening symptoms associated with COVID-19 who have no known exposure to COVID-19 should stay home from school and seek a medical evaluation and/or COVID-19 testing. Rapid antigen or PCR testing is acceptable in the absence of any known exposure.
Please be sure to notify the Health Office as soon as possible if your student has tested positive for or has been exposed to an individual with COVID-19. Your school nurse can help you navigate the process, since the DOH is taking a while to trace positive cases. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we comply with state and local health department requirements.
Course Selection Process Grades 9, 10, & 11
***ATTENTION 9-11TH GRADE STUDENTS/FAMILIES***
Student course selection for the 2022- 2023 school year:
Jan 3-Feb 11
All students will be working with their counselor to finalize course selections
Changes to requests must go through the counselor once finalized.
Changes can be made through the beginning of May.
To complete online course registration:
As you make your selections, have the WSHS Course Sheet in front of you. This is a list of all courses available. Descriptions are available when you do a course search (see following steps)
Log on to Infinite Campus
Select MORE > Course Registration> WSHS 22-23 in the index
You will notice that “Required Courses” have already been selected. “Required Courses” are those classes that your teachers have recommended. If you agree with the recommendation of your teacher, you do not need to add the class again.
If you would like to add another class or elective, or differ from your teacher’s recommendation;
Select Course Search
Type the course number or name in the search box, the click “Go”
Click on the title of the course. You will see a course description. Then scroll to the bottom and click “Request as an alternate”
If your selection does not match the teacher recommendation, you should first discuss this with your teacher. You will also be able to discuss options with your counselor during your scheduling meeting.
Helpful tips when registering for courses:
Consider your course selection carefully. Choose courses to fill graduation requirements but remember to take advantage of the many opportunities available to you in high school. Colleges are concerned with the academic strength of a student's program. Admissions representatives like to see students who have taken challenging courses and exceeded the minimum number of credits in math, science, and languages other than English.
While it is important to have a challenging schedule, it is equally important to do well in your classes. Do not select more than you can handle.
Look into the vast elective program that is offered. There are electives in art, business, English, math, music, science, social studies and technology.
A weak senior year will impact admission decisions related to college. Electives that add strength to a senior schedule include, but are not limited to: computer science principles, psychology, Latin, Microsoft Office, public speaking, digital earth, advertising & graphic design, multimedia and communications.

YEARBOOK
Hello Everyone!
Well it looks like yearbook sales have been booming, as well as those Senior Baby Ads. THANK YOU! However, with the booming sales, the numbers of available books is declining. Last year, we had a total sell out for the first time in ten years.
If you have not purchased your book, PARTICULARLY if you are a senior parent who bought a baby ad, then PLEASE make your online purchase before a) the price increases in February, and b) the books run out. We did have a couple of seniors who forgot to buy books, and when May distribution came, there were no books left to sell them; the saddest part being that there was a baby ad in the book they didn't have.
Due to high costs for printing and publishing, we have a limited amount of books that will be available. This number came about after having ten years of BOXES of leftovers and wasted funds. We found our "sweet spot" last year with being able to sell all of our stock, and we are hoping to have that again.
PLEASE see the information on this flyer and place your order if you wish to buy a book. There are fewer than 235 books left for sale!
Thank you for ALL your support this year!
