Westwood Families,
Next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments or MCAs. These are state test we are required to administer to students in grades 5-8 in reading and math. We will have a slight change to lunch times for grades 5 and 6 on these days:
- 12:20-12:50 p.m. - 6C/6D/6E(AIM)
- 12:30-1 p.m. - 6A/6B
- 12:50-1:20 p.m. - 5A/5B/5E (AIM)
- 1:10-1:40 p.m. - 5C/5D (Recess)
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) in Reading on Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19, and the MCA Math Assessment on Tuesday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 26. Cellphones and smartwatches are to be left at home during testing days.
Please be sure your student comes to school with their iPad charged and ready to go for testing. Just a reminder that it's important for students to bring their charged iPad to school EVERYDAY for learning and in this case, for testing.
Grade 5 students will have a field trip to Orchestra Hall on Monday, April 17. Students must have permission slips into Westwood in order to go on the field trip. We are only ordering tickets for those who have permission to go. Permission slips are due tomorrow, Thursday, April 13.
Tomorrow, Thursday, April 13 is also office hours for Westwood staff, 3:30 – 5 p.m. Staff are available during this time to conference with parents in person, over the phone, or online using WebEx. Please contact your child’s teacher to set up a time to meet or stop in.

Native American Parent Advisory Committee celebration - May 11
Save the date for the Native American Advisory Committee community meal and graduation celebration event on Thursday, May 11. This event will feature a blessing from Hope Flanagan, indigenous food, a drum group and recognition of our students and families. Please RSVP with the number of family members attending this event to ensure we have enough food and fun for everyone!

Upcoming Anoka County Community Events
Spring Lake Park Schools partners with The Anoka County Children and Family Council (ACCFC) and the Anoka County Mental Health Collaborative. These groups are collaborating with other Anoka County programs to host these upcoming events that are open to the Spring Lake Park Schools community.
- Spring into Wellness! A family fun event - Saturday, April 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Centennial Library. This event will include puppet making, yoga for kids, rock painting and more. Learn more.
- Substance Use - Community Resource Event - Saturday, May 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. This event is an educational gathering focusing on substance abuse and community wellness. Learn more.
Grace Brandt named the 2023 Athena Award Winner
Spring Lake Park High School is proud to announce senior Grace Brandt as their winner for the 2023 Athena Award for her outstanding athletic achievements! Grace is an accomplished athlete in gymnastics and track and field where she has won numerous conference, section and state awards.
When asked about her top three most important athletic achievements, Grace said “Receiving All-State in both gymnastics and track and field in 2021, placing 2nd in the top 10 records list for Spring Lake Park High School in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles and 4x1 relay and also being the first All-State gymnast in Spring Lake Park High School’s history.”

Tickets are available for "Matilda" the musical
Our Spring Lake Park High School theater cast, crew and orchestra are sure to blow you away with their upcoming performances of "Matilda" the musical. "Matilda" tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results. This musical is packed with catchy songs and a coming-to-age tale that is sure to captivate the entire family!

Spring Lake Park Lions Community Breakfast
Mark your calendars for the SLP Lions Community Breakfast on Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 8 a.m.-noon at Spring Lake Park High School (door #33).
Event details:
- An all you can eat breakfast including pancakes, French toast, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, juice and milk
- Free eye screenings for children (6 months-16 years old), face painting, a balloon artist and other activities
- A baked goods sale and big coloring books
- A free wellness fair - A1C and Lipid Panel testing, blood pressure checks and a COVID-19 Shot Clinic
If able, please bring non-perishable food donations for the food shelf, unwanted cell phones, eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Cut the Cake
With the weather warming up and the sun shining, Mrs. Larson's 5th grade classroom decided to take the morning meeting activity outside. Students had a blast playing "Cut the Cake" for the first time this year! They fully embraced the opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition, cheering each other on the entire time.

The spring lock-in is Friday, April 28.

Immunizations: Minnesota School Immunization Laws requires all students entering into 7th grade to be vaccinated against Tdap and meningococcal. The only exceptions are
- Medical Exemption
- Conscientious Exemption
- Physician statement contraindicating a vaccine
