Andrew Jackson

Hero or Zero?

1) He destroyed the Second Bank of the United States, because he saw it an an enemy of the common people. He also had a personal reason as he lost money due to the bank's fiscal policies. However, The Second Bank was a valuable asset to the nation's economy. This veto led to a panic and the depression of 1837.

2) Andres Jackson introduced the National Spoils System. This system fired incumbent officeholders and replaced them with those in the President's own party. As a result, new office holders may have cared little for the country and more for their own rewards. Hiring friends does little to help the nation. This policy caused political divisiveness along party lines that continues to harm our political system.

3) President Jackson was largely responsible for the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the "Trial of Tears". This forced the relocation of Native American Nations from their ancestral homes in the southeastern United States to an area west of the Mississippi River. Thousands died in route from the brutal conditions of exposure, disease, and starvation.

King Jackson

President Jackson abused his Presidential powers. He vetoed Congress bills 12 times including the veto of the Bank of the United States. He amplified the power of the presidency (which at the time was the weakest of the three branches).
