Dudes on Duty - D2
We at Bluff Park would love to have more males in the building, and are hoping to do this through a program called D2 (Dudes on Duty). Things such as something as simple as greeting our students with a "good morning," eating breakfast with students, reading books to them, assisting with homework, etc. Twice a month men would meet with 4th and 5th grade boys on a "How To" session. Possible sessions might include: how to tie a tie, change a bicycle tire, fold the laundry, use a hammer and a screwdriver, etc.
If you are interested, please click here to submit your information to receive a sign up sheet. We are looking for Dudes that are available to volunteer Monday - Friday from 7:00 - 7:40 AM.
3rd Grade Parents
It's time for your student to take the next step in music: the recorder! I will be ordering recorders at the end of this month for all 3rd-grade students. If you have not yet paid for a recorder, please do so by logging on to myschoolfees. If you are unsure whether or not you have paid, please check your payment history, or contact me at jkeyton@hoover.k12.al.us. Here is a note from Mrs. Honeycutt about myschoolfees:
Order securely online! Bluff Park encourages and prefers online payments at https://secure4.myschoolfees.com, accepting Discover and MasterCard (convenience fee applied) and electronic checks (no convenience fee). The school will receive an electronic notification of your online payment. If you do not have access to MySchoolFees or choose to use another form of legal tender, you may pay at the school by sending a personal check, money order, cashier's check, or cash. If paying by check, please include your name, address and phone number on the check. Counter or starter checks are not accepted. Please make checks payable to Bluff Park PTO. If the school should incur a fee due to a returned payment, you will be responsible for that fee.

From Mrs. Dolan - 3rd Grade Parents
3rd Grade Parents:
If you are interested in purchasing a book for the upcoming author visit, please look for the sheet that was sent home from school. If you need another sheet, please see attached. Send in the money to Mrs. Dolan in the library. 3rd grade visit will be on Feb. 19th.
From Ms. Kellman
This month all grade levels have been talking about positive and negative self talk. We have read the book, " Don't Feed the Worry Monster." This book talks about the more we worry the bigger our bug gets. Once the worry bug gets too big we can't control it and our emotions. We connected this to the zones and how our negative self talk or our worries, can get us deep into the red or blue zone. One student connected the zones to a Color Wheel, I have been using that for all classes. It has been great to define what part of the red, blue, yellow, or green zone we are in. We had great discussions in all grade levels on how we are in control of our thinking and emotions. We will continue next month on filling our tool box with calm down strategies and turning our negative self talk around.
Erin's Law
Attention All Parents: To comply with Erin’s Law, HCS school counselors and administrators have created a plan to provide basic child sexual abuse prevention lessons for students. We have prepared a brief video that outlines plans for elementary, middle and high school levels. You will find more detailed information on HCS’s plan to implement Erin’s Law, including the option for your child to opt out of these lessons if you so choose. This information is also available in Spanish. Disclaimer: If you need alternate accommodations in accessing the video content, please contact Marley Stephens at mstephens@hoover.k12.al.us.
Spanish with Senora Gaines
¡Hola mi famillia de Bluff Park! We are having a little fun with Día de San Valentín in Spanish with my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade amigos. We watched Tiburón Bebé for Día de San Valentín in Spanish, then discussed what we would like to receive for Valentine’s: las flores (flowers), el collar (necklace), los globos (balloons), los caramelos (candy), las cartas (cards/letters). My 1st and 2nd grade amigos played some Lotería in class this week to review/learn numbers 0-15. My Kindergarten amigos reviewed the days of the week with Sr Hodge and we read a story about a cerdo (pig) who was pequeño, but wanted to become grande, so he ate a little food each day.
Our frase de la semana is ¿En serio? [ehn-say-ree-oh] which means ‘Are you serious?’ or ‘Seriously?’
Gracias for all you do,
Profesora Melany Gaines

Flu Season
We are approaching flu season. Currently our school is not seeing many cases of the flu. However, we have started monitoring numbers daily. Please partner with us, as you monitor your children when they have symptoms of illness, to be sure that they do not attend school while they have fever. Common flu symptoms include:
Fever or feeling feverish/chills.(Temp of 100.0 or above)
Cough.
Sore throat.
Runny or stuffy nose.
Muscle or body aches.
Headaches.
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
.
The Alabama Department of Public Health urges the general public to follow these actions to avoid getting and spreading the flu:
* Stay at home if you have a fever, and for at least 24 hours post fever without fever-reducing
* Wash your hands often
* Cover your cough and sneeze
* Clean and disinfect your environment
* Consider getting the flu vaccine
Parents, please notify the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed by a physician with the flu. You may call the Health Room at 439-2830 or email Nurse Melanie at mjourdan@hoover.k12.al.us to report any cases.
