Picture Re-Takes
During our original picture day, there was a problem with the camera lens and now many kids have to have their pictures retaken. This will happen next Thursday, Oct. 9. This is why some students have not received their pictures already.
Mind-Up
This week we started Mind-Up, which is curriculum that teaches mindfulness. We are currently learning about how our brains work and how we can use our brain to help us focus and make good decisions throughout the day. We will work to weave this into all aspects of our day and Ms. Brooke and I will work hard to model this for the students.
Ms. Brooke
We are so happy to have Ms. Brooke as our new assistant. It is so nice to have another adult in the room all day and the kids already think she is awesome.
Pinwheels for Peace
All IDES students participated in this project and now there is a beautiful pinwheel garden in front of the school. In our class, we have been reading books about peace and talking about its different meanings.
Pocket Day
On our first Pocket Day, we had a total of 39 pockets. Last week, we smashed it with 130 pockets!
Math
- We read Two of Everything and we have been talking about doubling. Please talk about doubling at home. "If we doubled these muffins, how many would we have?"
- Practice skip counting by 2's and see how high your child can count.
- At the end of the week, we will send home some math games to help with fluency with addition facts for ten. Even if your child knows these, the games will improve how automatic they are, Please keep up with the cards because math games we send home in the future will require them.
Reading
In reading, we are focusing on characters and setting. When you are reading to your child or talking about the books he or she is reading, talk about who the characters are, what they are like, and when and where the story takes place. We will discuss other story elements throughout the year so that all students can retell and summarize a story in a meaningful way.
Dot Day Project
Last week, we had a video conference with a second-grade class in Santiago, Chile. Among other things, we learned that in Chile, they are getting ready for spring and that soccer is a BIG deal. Both classes read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and talked about the theme of trying new things. The students created trading cards to exchange with one another. These included suggestions for new things to try and some dot art. See some examples below. We can't wait to get our trading cards from the students in Chile.
